2011...the year gas hit $5.00 per gallon

What will it do to our hobby? just food for thought.
There has been strong signs through many avenues that this peak will happen by summer 2011.

I'll still be collecting, but think twice about purchasing less high $ cards and moving to precious metals, bars, coins.

Happy New Years

Do you mean nationwide? Because it hit 5.00 a few years back here in NY.

    Good for you.

Im gonna have my Mercedes' gas flow changed over to cooking oil. My dad has an all you can eat seafood buffet and they use tons of vegetable oil. The car will still look good but smell like catfish and french fries.

hope it goes to 10, that way 5 will seem like a bargain

*Correction* I think the lost art of Gas Siphoning will climb the crime charts, we will have a shortage of siphon kits off the Walmart shelves.

More accidents on the freeways from people trying to get better gas mileage driving 60 mph in 70 mph zones.

I hear ya...I kick myself for not buying when gold was $900 an oz.

So the bill states that anyone in business selling or buying gold/silver will be required to process 1099's.
I'm assuming this does not exclude the common man making purchases in a non "business" manner?

There will be a revolution in this country before the government tries confiscating or banning gold/silver dealings.

<< <i>after the fourth of july weekend in 2008 i paid $3.99/per gallon. on december 30 of the same year i paid $1.19 per gallon. it went up from there. tells you what a stock market crash can do for you. missouri has some of the lowest gas taxes in the country but we are at $2.89 right now and looking for $4 by the end of the year.

and before you jump into gold know about this little tidbit thrown into the health care bill

1099 to be issued on all transactions over $600 >>

  • As horrible as this might sound we need gas to go to $5.00 for about a six month period and oil to be $125-140/ bll before this country will get up on the wheel and make some changes that will help our futures. If we don't do something about being self sufficient when it comes to energy the day will be here when we all will be screwed. Rich and poor. America's getting lazy but when we're called on and our lifes are disrupted watch out here we come with solutions.

I'll be buying more cardboard and less gas.

    Sustainability!

    Interesting theory, more cardboard...less gas...

The big rage going on in the outdoor recreation community on this topic is that people are affected heavily by motor boat gas use and commuting to the recreation sites.

As stated immediately above, position your investments right and $5/gallon isn't a big deal. Ok, gotta go re-position my 401k now.

Eh, I've already invested in oil futures and when it hits $150/barrel I'm cashing out and will buy some more cards.

A few years back? What a shock! lol

Gas could go to $10 a gallon and I'll still be driving my Suburban to card shows with a smile on my face... image

Not sure what is so shocking Jeff, maybe you could expand on that?

I was simply stating that 2011 will not be the yr gas first hit 5.00 a gallon (here in NY)

That is if the OP even meant it that way.

I'm glad gas could go to 10.00 a gallon and it would not hurt you.

    Wouldn't hurt me either, I don't drive a suburban.

    Happy New Year.
    Good for you.
  • whoever hasnt gone to the internet with buying and selling cards will go to it, people will print shipping labels and just put the envelopes in their mailboxes.
  • I am just glad we have oil wells and wind towers on our land!! Bring it on!!

People will complain and pay it. It's the same thing every time they raise the taxes on cigarettes. A lot of complaining, but no one seems to quit smoking because of it. Likewise, people won't quit driving or buy smaller cars. Americans are lazy and used to luxuries that they treat as conveniences... Eventually, some will find a way to put a spin on it for political gain. They always do!

I know the first thing I will do is go on a hobby message board and complain about it.

Its hurts EVERYBODY in the pocketbook, if not directly than indirectly. Watch the price of food & produce skyrocket when it costs $5/gallon to move them across the country.

The last time the price of gas skyrocketed past $4.00 per gallon many on here complained often and loudly. Those in charge took note and the price came down steadily until the complaining stopped.

  • Buy the OIH ETF to hedge it. Once you own OIH, you won't care if gas/oil goes up, you'll essentially own it

This is a touchy subject here (the economy). There are quite a few threads that touch on this subject in the Precious Metals forum. Some great info. backed by good arguments.

I heard that the CEO's of every major gas company have an assistant patrolling baseball card message boards and hitting refresh every 15 minutes looking for new information.

    We're $2.65 here in Wyoming
And we have a budget surplus
    And no state income tax
    And only 5% sales tax
And an abundance of natural resources
    And a strong education system

...and only 500,000 people in the entire state

    go figure

While attending college in Utah back in the dark ages, we had a saying for Wyoming. Wyoming, where men are men and sheep are nervous...

I miss my visits to Jackson Hole, though. After Alta, Snowbird and Deer Valley, it was some of the best skiing in the West.

Generally speaking, most people in this hobby have higher than average incomes. Buying pieces of cardboard placed in plastic holders is not for people living from check to check.

We had the same fear back in 2003-2004 when gas prices crossed $2.50 per gallon and guess what, nothing really happened to the hobby. It took a massive economic disaster to finally drive the market down.

Higher gas prices will affect you depending on how much it comprises the monthly expenditures. For me, my drive to work is 14 miles and my car gets 25 mpg. $5 gas will hurt but not enough for me to take up bird watching over cards. Instead of splurging on a case of cards, I would probably downsize to 5 boxes and no more quick fix retail blasters. I would still buy high quality vintage since I see it more of an investment, remember high quality graded vintage kept its value better than stocks or real estate during this past recession.

If you live in Fontana, CA and work downtown, you will be probably be selling your collection. If so, please contact me, I will buy it.

    that was a given, obv.
  • The national price will not come close that level. We have ample resources and any $5.00 is the pure product of manipulation not reflective of actual supply and demand. The economy makes a very slow recovery and 2011 is a better year than 2010.
