which is better cannon t1i or nikon d5000?

Which camera in your opinion is better or is it about equal? Looking into getting one of them and putting a sigma 105 macro lense on it. I just can't take good pics of coins especially slabbed ones with my nikon cool pix and sending coins out to get imaged gets expensive!

I personally like Nikon better than canon.

I use the Canon Xsi and love it. I think the t1i is not necessary unless you plan to shoot video. The megapixel difference is also minimal that you won't see any difference in quality. Gently used Xsi can be had for around $400. Works great for family pics as well. Never used the Nikon.

I prefer Nikon as well, but Canon will do you just fine, too. I also prefer Coke over Pepsi, Audi over BMW, PCs over Macs, vim over EMACS. What model Coolpix do you have, and what kind of pics do you want from your setup? The reason I ask is that quite often not being able to get decent pics is a function of technique and not equipment. You could spend over $1000 on equipment and still have the same problems because of something you could have corrected to your satisfaction with your Coolpix setup.

The one I have now I believe is a cool pix l20. When coins are raw I can do a pretty good job but once in a slab the glare kills me. If I was able to manually focus wouldn't that let me focus on the coin instead of the camera autofocusing on plastic and the glare? I mostly would be taking pics of coins with color.

    Great coin pictures come from:

    - Practice, lots of it, and plenty of patience
    - A good, critical eye and sensibility
    - Proper set-up (copy stand)
    - Adequate, varied lighting
    - A good macro lens, often more than one length
    - A DSLR
    - Effective post-processing software and the knowledge on its use

I think the DSLR brand may be the least important of the above.
    Lance.
  • I prefer the Nikon but I think cannon makes a good product.
