<< <i>I have a question about the 1952 "Superbird". Is the "S" really punched in (raised) or just a couple of hits that look like a "S" like my 1948 dime with "S" (hits) in flame of torch? >>
The 'S' is raised. I think it happened the same way I believe all of the thread-impression Morgan dollar varieties occurred- A hard piece of wire (steel wool, perhaps) was between the die and hub when the die was made... I don't think it was intentional. Very cool variety, though- it sure looks like an 'S'.

Intriguing to me that the close-up of the reverse in the linked auction shows very little detail on the breast feathers as opposed to the ones I've seen, such as the ones below. It seems more intuitive that the coins holding the cameo designation would have better detail than those without. As there's no replacement for seeing the coin in hand Tommy1, would you agree that your coin shows less breast detail than mine?
I believe the 2nd one would has a cameo finish, but wasn't given the designation with the color.

<< <i>It's definitely raised, see the inset on the bottom of my photos, you can see with the light coming from the right that the shadow is consistent with a raised S. >>
No arguement here.

<< <i>i'm not trying to take your steam away here, but since the TPG's stopped recognizing the variety wouldnt the population reports be skewed?? >>
They, at least pcgs is recognizing these still, its get the superbird designation on the holder. modcrewman one is in the bank vault and the other is on the way back to me, i think the pictures from heritage didn't do the coin justice. I will look when i get it back as your first coin does have breast feathers that stand out more than the picture i have. this is the reverse of the first one i got.........you can see the s clearer but picture is still not like in hand.
