My Favorite Purchase of 2010

Inspired by Speety's thread!

Picked this up several months ago but kept it a secret until now...and I'm only showing about 5% of the coin!
I've picked up a lot of great Bust Silver this year, but this is something particularly special and holds a nice spot in my collection image

I'm hoping 2011 is just as Numismaticallu great as 2010 was.

  • Did you buy it as a Curl Base or did you cherrypick it?

Could be a Bust Dime, or it could be a Rare Die Marriage Bust Half-Dime - several for this date!

Interesting guess given just the date and bottom portion of the obverse showing image

Who knows, there could be a BIG hole at 12 o'clock, a scratch across the bust, or maybe it was cut in half and only the bottom portion suvives imageimage

Or maybe it's a nice coin image

Thank God I'm not the only one who wasn't immediately aware
of what you're holding back from the collecting community - also
there seems to be a lack of Bust Dime collectors - otherwise sirens
would be going off right about now !!

Happy New Year Stone - see you later this week !! Your Grandfather
told me he and you were sharing a room at FUN. Just make sure you
make him take his Metamusil - you know how cranky he can get if he's
    not Regular.

the 1 looks off for a dime

you must have a special half-dime die pairing or something

Nice meeting you this week, Stone. The conversations about all of your recent finds was good fun at F.U.N. I hope 2011 treats you as well as 2010. image

    Did not come from Realone

It was an 1829 Curl Base 2 Dime with a reverse brockage of the obverse design, struck on a $2-1/2 gold planchet.

    From another post.

Saw STONE's wonderful new dime. Very cool.

"Since its discovery in 1973, the Curl Base 2 has always been regarded as a valuable coin. A Guide Book of United States Coins lists a price of $20,000 for an example in Very Fine-20 condition. In November, 2006 a certified Very Good-8 example was auctioned by Stack's in the Norweb sale and was sold for over $10,000. Most of the surviving examples are in the Good to Very Good grade range. The finest example certified by ANACS is in Very Fine condition. Any example is truly a numismatic treasure."
