Any place to find preseaon stats for the 1988 49ers

I can't seem to find them anywhere. I was able to find the scores but what I am interest in is finding out if Steve Young made appearances in the first two home preseason games.

I'd consider waiting a bit after the season ends and sending a letter to the 49ers PR department with your request

As an aside, unless he was hurt you would have to think that he had to have appeared in these pre-season games (wouldn't you?)

  • Do you have the dates for the games? I'm not sure how much it would cost, but maybe you could go to a San Francisco newspaper (or the opponents' one?) the day after and look for a box score in there?

Usually the backups will play most of the preseason games with the starters playing a quarter or half.

But this was a slightly different situation, before the 1988 season, Bill Walsh had said the quarterback position was open between Montana and Young. That first home preseason game the 49ers won 21-something, and one headline notes, "Montana leads the way..." or something like that. I could pay $5 to see the whole article....but the stub is likely only worth $1-2 being preseason.

Also, Young appears in all road games in 1988, but only 4 home games. It is fairly well known that Montana and Young never liked each other. So it appears Montana tried to kind of shut Young out of the home games so to say...or maybe Walsh thought Montana was considerably less on the road? Montana was hurt part of the year and I think Young started 4 games (I looked it up last night.)

I had the second game in the Young game section...so he played in it. Google use to have better Newspaper Archive access., and I likely got that info from them (They have a different name now.)

I kinda like the write the 49ers ideal as I also have a 49ers charity event ticket that is 1989...without looking. Perhaps they could confirm if Young was or wasn't at that event as well.

Media guides might have more details if you can get a hold of one after the '88 season.
  • Here are the games

    August 6 1988 vs Raiders 49ers 24-10
August 28 1988 vs Seahawks 49ers 27-21...my speadsheet show he played in this game, but I did not leave any reference on where I got the info.

That's not a bad ideal either. I think I will go that route first. Buy the first media guide with Young on it. I could use it for the Young collection anyway. That might be the 1992 or 1993 though. Young was a starting backup to an injured Montana in 1992, Montana left to KC after the season,

  • Young got the starting nod in 1991. The only games he didn't start in 1991 were the ones he was injured and Steve Bono took over. I remember attending the last game of the 1990 season when Young started and they lost to the Saints. It was a throwaway game for the Niners who already had home field locked, but the Saints needed it to make the playoffs. I lived in the Bay Area in 1988 and I don't recall there being any real open competition. How would you bench Montana? Young was known to be an up and coming star, but not of the calibre of Joe Montana at the time. Any time Young got was due to Montana injuries or in games late in the season where Montana was getting rested.

Yes, Young started in 1991 (and won his first passing title) as Leonard Marshall took Montana out in the 1990 postseason. But the team was not his. He was considered by the fans, media and team as a starting backup in 1991 and 1992. Montana looked like he would be back in 1992, but would only play in the final game. It was only after Montana left after the 1992 season that the team was really Youngs (and some did not accept him until after Young's SB victory a few years later.) It isnt easy to replace a legend.

As far as the Young vs Montana....there absolutely was a qb controvery in San Francisco in 1988, here are a few references, there are literally 100s I could provide.

I have a library of 49ers books, and pretty much all the players say the same thing. Understand, even Jerry Rice complained after the 1992 season when Montana went to KC.

And I just found the reference I needed, it looks like Young threw all three td's in that first game.
