I agree with CCAC on design #1.....but #7 has a similar look of an early commemorative and I like it.
Hopefully little Timmy G. will agree with CCAC for a 3rd time

2011 Platinum Eagle Design Candidates Reviewed by CFA
By Michael Zielinski on December 27th, 2010
Categories: Featured Articles, US Coins, United States Mint

The Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) has recently reviewed the design candidates for the 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle. This coin will feature the concept “To Insure Domestic Tranquility.”

The collector version of the American Platinum Eagle is in the middle of a six year design series exploring the core concepts of American Democracy. Each concept is presented on the reverse design of the coin, while the obverse of each coin features an image of the Statue of Liberty designed by John Mercanti.

For the past two years, the US Mint has issued only one ounce proof Platinum Eagles. Bullion versions of the coin have not been available. If bullion coins are issued for 2011, the reverse will feature an image of a soaring eagle designed by Thomas D. Rogers.

The United States Mint provided the CFA with nine different reverse design candidates for the concept “To Insure Domestic Tranquility”. The CFA recommended alternative AEP-R-05. This design depicts three hands holding a laurel wreath. The design was preferred based on its “simplicity and legibility” as opposed to the “excessive complexity of many presented alternatives”. The wreath was viewed as an appropriate compositional element within the circular shape of the coin, but it was recommended that the hands be simplified by removing the jewelry and clothing present.

At a separate meeting the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) had recommended alternative AEP-R-01. The CCAC’s specific comments and other details of the meeting will be provided in a future Coin Update News article.

The eight remaining design candidates for the 2011 American Platinum Eagle Proof Coin appear below.

The United States Secretary of the Treasury has the final authority to select the design for the 2011 Proof Platinum Eagle.

For the two previous issues of the “Foundations of Democracy” series, the Secretary chose designs recommended by the CCAC, rather than the alternate designs suggested by the CFA.

For the 2009 Proof Platinum Eagle, the CFA recommended a design depicting a small tree with thirteen leaves for the concept “To Form A More Perfect Union”. The selected design presented four faces with intertwined hair and clothing. For the 2010 Proof Platinum Eagle, the CFA recommended a design depicting a torch for the concept “To Establish Justice”. The selected design depicted a blindfolded Justice holding scales and an olive branch.

Get rid of the hands on coin #6 and you got a winner.

8 and 9... I'll just say neither appeal to me and leave it at that.

AEP-R-01 is by far the best.

Designs labeled AEP-R-01 and 02 are neat, but they remind me of the French coinage previously issued. Design 03 is too busy, design 04 reminds me of old Olympic styles that have been used by the US Mint and I would be stunned if neither of the designs 08 and 09 make it since they are nauseatingly politically correct. I would have chosen design 07.

Rev 1 was the CCAC's preference...it has life and motion and yet is a symbolic depiction of domestic tranquility with the field of grain and dove. It is very much in the tradition of Roty’s “The Sower (La Semeuse)” and Weinmann’s “Walking Liberty.”

The wreath is static and meaningless - looks like an ad for holiday greenery.

AEP-R-01 would be my choice as a longtime collector of the Plat Series.

The dove of peace needs to be carrying an olive branch in it's beak in front of the poodle lion.

Not a - what is that? - esoteric lotus Lilly pad bloom. At least I think that's what that foliage is.

None of those designs have the required eagle. Presumably they'll stick another inconspicuous eagle-head somewhere in the fields.
  • CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,563 ✭✭✭✭✭
How about #7 with a lion and a lamb rather than a lion and a dove?

It figures that CCAC would get all turned-on by a bunch of hands groping a wreath. Why can't they just go for the aethetically-pleasing designs and forget the pc crap?

  • Is this what we have become as a Nation? We are now considering putting a dove on our highest denomination coin? FFS. I agree that the best design of these samples would be removing the hands from #6.
  • And #7 makes Liberty look like a drag queen.

#1 is the best. Fix the toes, though.

5, 6, 8 and 9 have no artistic or any other kind of merit. Hey, I can do clipart, too!

2 is just a lazy version of 1.

3 is okay but leaves me wondering what they are going for. Did the dove pull feathers out of it's own tail to make that design?

4 makes me think of the Olympics.

7 is a good design that with a little refining could become a great design.

I'll never have any of these but I'm giving my opinion anyway. Even if they weren't so darn expensive, most of these designs would not make me want to buy it anyway, except #1.
