Nice card, but I think the grade is right. Too much chipping toward the bottom and small dog ear on the top left.

Sorry, didn't realize this was your card, thought it was a bad link to an eBay auction.

    +1 I agree completely.

Is it possible they took off half a grade for centering top to bottom also?
  • heritageheritage Posts: 2,662 ✭✭✭
Card looks great! But i do agree with the grade.
That said I'd be happy to have that one myself.

I think the chipping on the bottom is negligible and common even for 9s
    They must see something, though
If there is a slight dog ear top right, then I agree that's probably your answer
    Nice card

Chipping on the bottom edge and a touch on the top left corner keeps this card out of a 9 holder, IMO. Star cards are always graded a bit tougher, too, IMO..

I agree that a bit better T/B centering could have yielded the 8.5 because of eye appeal. It's a truly sharp card.

I think this is probably one of those cards that looks stunning in hand and the minor flaws are exaggerated in a large scan.

    Thats no 8, IMO.

I've submitted hundreds of minis over the last couple years and the chipping on the bottom edge (which is common on the purple and brown colored cards will keep a card from grading Mint 9. Also, if there is any touch of white on the corner under 5x magnification, that will keep the card in an 8 or 8.5 holder at best. I can't tell from the scan if that is a touch of white on the top left corner or not. If not, I think you might get an 8.5. Minis are graded very toughly these days in general, more so at least than in years past.

  • Great looking card.

    My uneducated question is: what's a "dog-ear"?

I don't understand the toughness on the grades on 1975 topps but I would say be happy with the 8.
I have seen 7's that look that good. I don't get it.

A corner bend, like the way a dog's ear bends down. Another example is turning down the corner of a book page to mark your place. < shudders >

Ok, that makes sense. I'm familiar with that (I guess the term is a bit antiquated now in the age of Kindles and ereaders.) But, wow, you guys have great eyes. The dog-ear in the top right corner must be incredibly small in this situation. I don't see it but a faint, very faint tip of a bend.
