Anyone know rough value of auto'd GU basketball shoes - Barkley, Nique+

So I have game used shoes of a few star players (and a few scrubs) that I am curious about the value of. All shoes are autographed as well. The stars I have are Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, and Dominique Wilkins. The Barkley shoes are the very first shoes he was given as a Phoenix Sun.

Not sure I would ever sell - but how would I estimate the value? How about for a semi-star (Danny Manning) or scrubs?
Thanks for all insight.

I'll answer but don't give my estimates a lot of weight as I'm by no means an expert on the current value of GU shoes. I've been a long-time collector of GU equipment but never was much into basketball. However, back in the early 1990s I had a card store and one of the guys that came into my store was in in-person autograph collector that started asking players for shoes and he would trade some of them to me for cards.

Most were scrubs and many years later I sold many of them on eBay at prices ranging from $10-50 plus shipping. Since they were all nearly brand new it is possbile that many were sold to people with big feet as that is a lot less than shoes like that would cost in a store. For better name players, I think I got $150 for a pair of Tim Haraway's when he was still an all-star, same for Chris Mullin and around $100 for a pair of 'Niques.

Judging by the amount of shoes for sale at the time I have to assume that they weren't all that hard to get.

So in the spirit of Antiques Roadshow, if you are going to value them for "insurance purposes" I'd probably say:

    Common player $50 each

    Manning/Dominique $100 each

    Pippen and Barkley $200 - $250

You probably wouldn't get that much if you sold them, but if you went to replace them those are probably about the asking prices you would find.

    Hope this helps.
  • By no means am I even remotely an expert, but if you get the items authenticated (shoes and signatures both), you'll have higher figures for all of them. I would think even a scrub would be more than $50 as the plain shoes are worth that much if sold at retail.

I have to concur with MooseDog. I've had a few pairs of game used basketball shoes before, and while I personally thought they were awesome and should be valued much higher, I had a horribly difficult time trying to sell them, and I can typically sell "ice to eskimos". I ended up getting very nominal prices and that was for relatively top tier guys. That's been several years ago, but additionally I had posted some game used shoes on this board within the last couple years (not for sale, just for value estimates for one of my friends) of current stars and most of the PM's, emails I received believed those had very little value as well.

I think in order to realize a decent price, you are either going to have to find a huge fan of a specific player, or have the very top tier legends, like Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Dr. J, etc.

Thanks gents - I know about a year ago I saw a pair of Barkleys signed sell for $250-ish, but that's about it. Not looking to sell right now anyway (especially the Barkleys since they are his first pair as a Sun), but always good to know the approximate value of this stuff.

The others some day I may look to sell or trade...although I will hang on to my brothers as well to go with his jersey - not that anyone would want his image

If it helps The Bulls will often set up a table at home games and sell GU shoes, warm ups etc. No names will be about $40 and name players (Think Kirk Hinrich) are about $125. I have never seen Derrick Rose and nearly bought Eddy Curry years ago for $125 (thankfully I passed). I would have thought NBA game shoes would be more valuable! Pippen for $250 seems like a good value.

is there any way to verify that they are his first as a Sun? if not, you may want to just hang on to them.

Not sure - I got them from him directly, and have the ticket stub and locker room pass from the game still (I think)...it was also just the 4th game of the season. My brother could also 'swear' to it I suppose, and had a brief stint if that carried weight.
