Message from Paypal?

Have any of you seen or received this kind of message via e-mail from paypal?

Dear XXXXXXX,

We recently changed our pricing so that all PayPal customers can receive money from friends and family within the US for free. PayPal merchants receiving money as payment for a purchase, continue to incur fees.

We’re not sure if you are aware of this, but we noticed that some of your customers are sending you personal payments for purchases.
Unfortunately, this violates our rules, and we need your help correcting this. Please don’t ask or allow your customers to use personal payments to pay for their purchases.

If we continue to see such activity after Jan.3, 2011, we may have to disable your ability to receive personal payments, and then you will pay fees for all money received through PayPal.

You can find more information about payment types and fees in sections
4.2 and 8 of our User Agreement – just click “Legal Agreements” at the bottom of any PayPal page.

If you have any questions, concerns, or think we may have made a mistake, please contact us at P2P@paypal.com. Thank you for helping us resolve this matter.

Sincerely,

P2P Risk Team

PayPal

I have sent or received maybe 5-6 "gift payments" thru Paypal in all the time I have used it, with none of them being 4 figures.

I sent this message to "spoof" at paypal.com last week and got nada in return.

I guess what I am asking is; Do you think that this message is real?

also, what is P2P Risk Team?

Thanks for any replys.

Gary

Looks legit since they are not asking for any info.

Whenever I send gift funds I add a happy graduation, birthday or something. My amounts have been pretty small on them.

I suppose it could be real. I haven't gotten the message nor have I received a "gift" payment. image

Real messages from paypal use your name in the salutation.

I would imagine that P2P in this case means person to person. And the fact that they strike fees for those transactions is considered risky in the sense that folks could defraud their system. So the P2P Risk team is there to mitigate that fraud.
  • Log in to your account via the PayPal website home page, not via any link in the email. Check your messages there. If not there, I would be suspicious at the very least. However improbable it seems that scammers could find out about your transactions, they may just be playing the odds that at Christmas, people will send money like this. It's like sales. All scammers expect is 1 hit out of 100 or so. Goes a long way in some countries.

This is the way to do it and also payments received should contain a similar message. Since you already got caught I wouldn't try it with that paypal account.
Paypal is clamping down on fee avoidance.

Your friends may receive money for free but it will cost you to send it so they are still getting their money.
  • I got the same email too. Ive done under 10 gift transactions.
  • Ive gotten one of those with out any wrong doing on my part. It came as a shock. I require PP for security deposits on a vacation rental. I had a number of them come unbeknownst to me from the friends and family option.

Since I did nothing wrong on my end.... and got that nasty gram, on some transactions with round dollar amounts, I now ask people to put in the description.... Pay me back as soon as you can. I'll ask others, depending on time of the year, to say Happy Birthday. Merry Christmas otherwise, Have fun!!

I believe that is only true when using a credit card. If it comes directly from a bank account there is no fee to either party. (I didn't double-check this. It is just from a sometimes faulty memory.)

I got one of those about 6 weeks ago and they were right... I was taking some payments using gift. I've toned it down somewhat but I still use it for larger deals.

I haven't had any further communications with them about it.
