2cd birthday present to myself, my first box proof set! ('54)

I always wanted one and took a chance sight unseen from a dealer's website, a guy I trust. I wasn't disappointed. I dont think these coins are anything special so they'll remain packaged, but they'll be mine for the time being

image am I causing these things to become poisoned where they are? that's my only concern. The surfaces looked pretty darn nice to me.

It actually looks like a very nice set. I would imagine that as long as you don't let the staple rust that you should be okay with storing the coins in the cellophane.

  • Hi,

is that cello and original? It looks like the later material - I should get my glasses!

As I understand it, yes. I was shocked to see zero rust, the box is in perfect shape and the packaging is actually supple to the touch. either it's a crazy replacement or someone really stored this under perfect conditions for a long long time...

Others have more experience with sets of this era than I do, but the sets that I have handled (generally 1951-1953) have had much more brittle cellophane rather than supple cellophane. Perhaps a repackaged set?

That cello does not look original to me.
    Is it soft and pliable?
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • Hi Hyperion,

I am going to guess the second scenario you described is correct. Others will chime in I am sure.

re-reading the original sales I believe the inner packaging was replacement to the original, but to me I dont care, it has the overall effect of the original packaging without the dangers image

it had so much life to it, it suprised me. with the outer box being in such perfect shape I had to ask.

    IAE.. I like it image

Soft and pliable can equal pvc. Be careful.
Every set I have opened has had brittle cello as Tom has mentioned.

yep yep, Im inquiring. it's just softer than I expected for an old set....
  • Hi again,

You asked about storage - well, the box is loaded with sulfur and slabs are gas permeable so I'd be wary of this. Yes, JRocco has a point - watch pout for PVC with this soft pliable plastic stuff. It is likely none of this set is original to the packaging or perhaps itself so you might as well replace them into some little poly sleeves you know are "safe" and store them outside the box. That is what I'd do anyway. Original cello would likely be discolored along with the coins, and very brittle as mentioned.

You sure are right about these old boxes Eric.
They led to some nice toning if that is what you wanted.

  • Hi there JRocco,

Yes, those early packaging materials can lead to wonderful results either very light or very deep - or green muck like the PCGS Pr66 Walker I had last year. It was totally original - no question - like I have never seen - and extremely ugly. If one recalls my penchant for toned Proofs (my "coffee stained 1941 Pr 5C etc.) - even I hated this coin. As it turns out - I miss it! Your Franklin has lovely "champagne and sky" light tone - beautiful.

    Best wishes for the holiday,
    Eric
  • Great pick up, sight unseen.

  • Hey Frank,

I store my early proof sets in Capital holders, but I also keep the original cellophane, staple and box for each one. Some of my proof coins have started to tone in the capital holders, inside my safe?? Must be due to rinse or ??

  • Does anyone concur that the cent has some cuds on the reverse? Especially right under the AM in America. Interesting find, indeed. I have always liked mint state coins from the 1950's.
