1987 Baseball Card Stock Market

I ran across this a day or two ago and wanted everyone to see it. It is an investment report put out by the American Card Exchange in 1987. President - Tony Galovich; Chief Financial Officer - David Hall. They actually had a BID/ASK for all major cards, thus creating a "market" or "exchange." In each issue, they also advised on whether to BUY, SELL, or HOLD certain cards or sets. There were 10 pages in this issue, and I have included two of them below.

Quite interesting to say the least. Thanks for sharing this information.

  • There should be one for the 80's and 90's cards......talk about a crash. More like a disaster or recession. For this century, the high price points are $1500 when they're hot and half that when they're cold. It's horrible!

I remember when several people tried to start an "exchange" for baseball cards. I guess ebay pretty much became the exchange we were all looking for. These guys just needed grading and the internet to catch up with them.

This issue also had BID/ASK for 10 card rookie "blocks" of the 1980s. The 1985 Topps Eric Davis 10-card block was $100 BID, $130 ASK. Also, they offered to grade cards for a fee. I've already put the issue away, so I can't remember the fee. But, I do remember that you didn't have to pay them the fee if you sold them the card at their BID price. Anybody remember what ever became of Tony Galovich? David Hall, the CFO, is now President of Collectors Universe.

I don't know what happened to David Hall. He kind of dropped out of the hobby. I don't think he's done much of anything since the BCIR days.

Tony was one of my regular writers in the early days of Baseball Cards magazine. He was controversial because he was one of the first to pair the words baseball cards with investment. He worked hard to make himself very knowledgeable in the field. He was always a fun guy to have a drink with at all the major card shows.

He suffered significant health setbacks some 5-10 years ago, but, last I heard, he is still above ground and occasionally makes an appearance on a couple of the card forums.

Wasn't David Hall part of PSA?

Michigan residents will associate David Hall with the mortgage sleaze that pushed every type of gimmick mortgage on the market. I remember this clown actually showed up on radio and TV shows and people used to ask for him financial advice. Nothing against the industry but mortgage "bankers" are glorified form fillers.

David Hall is now the President of Collectors Universe. I didn't know this until a fellow member kindly PM'ed me to let me know. I guess Mr. Hall, who is a "coin guy," has done okay for himself since he and Tony Galovich tried the baseball card market thing.

Does someone with more information than I have want to let us know the extent of David Hall's involvement with the founding of PSA?
