OT: Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight

There is to be a total lunar eclipse tonight starting at 1:15 AM EST and should be full by 2:41 AM. But, due to clouds most will not see the occurence. It will be visible in all of North and South America. Just thought I would mention this.

And the interesting thing about this lunar eclipse is that it's the first winter solstice (Dec 21) lunar eclipse since 1635 - about 20 years after Shakespeare left the scene. Thin, high clouds here will keep it from being a big. bright sight, but I may catch it here and there if I can stay awake that long.

Robkool, left Los Angeles this morning to torrential rains, but now back in Phoenix. We have a clear moonshot tonight, I am staying up and waiting for it :-)

    Rain here....
  • I just went outside to have a cigarette at 11:30 PM EST and it's cloudy. Doubt it will be visable here in south central North Carolina. I live right outside Charlotte.

Crystal clear here in south central Florida.

Last lunar eclipse I observed was in south Jersey in October 2004, here's a shot of the crater Tycho from that eclipse during totality, taken with a 9.25" SCT and an ATIK camera.

  • Just went outside at 1:30 to check on the eclipse but couldn't see it for the snow. I promise you snow is more rare here than eclipses.

Thanks Ron for starting a thread on it. I knew there was an eclipse... but given good old short term memory loss I forgot it was tonight.

    Great photo.

It's patchy clouds here in SF Bay Area... watched it for about 1/2 an hour... I'll try and catch some more in a bit.
  • Near totality now

Actually got a glimpse at totality between clouds in the Seattle area.
  • Just went outside and looked. Can't see a thing for the clouds but it has quit snowing. Well it was lightly snowing, nothing serious.

  • Here in NJ the moon was extremely bright from late afternoon on. It actually looked like it was plugged in and lit up. Very cool.

Yes...the giant monster ate the moon. But, thankfully, a small tribe on some island in the south pacific chanted, danced, and sacrificed pigs and ate their hearts so the moon reappeared. (whew)

Was neat to see. I could only see a short period of it, due to clouds. Heres one of my pics, nothing as clear as the couple above from PlatinumDuck, but you can see the red.

My sons and I stayed up late last night to watch it with a campfire going in the back yard and a tent to crash in afterward. Good times!

Here's some red to go with the red moon.

I stayed up with my two sons last night. They really got a kick out of the event. I was worried that the clouds would obscure it, but the heavy clouds held off until the totality was over.
