Peace dollar question/red book

Good evening , i was given a 1934 peace dollar tonight and having not seen one from the 30's before i checked it out in the red book.My question is why does the 1934 have similar mintage figures yet the S mint ones are valued far higher in better grades ?It is a lower mintage but not by huge numbers. This is a D mint and yes , without my glasses i got a little interested when i seen a mintmark.

  • The story, years ago, was that many 1934 S had a very poor quality MM and the sharp MM was worth $$$. I don't see that distinction in writing today, but supect it may still exist.
  • Thank you very much : ) I really appreciate that information and your reply.I'll keep this one and it'll remind me of that story each time i look at it.

Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia estimates that the surviving population of 1934-S dollars is considerably lower than that of the Philadelphia and Denver dollars of the same date. For Morgan and Peace dollars, mintage figures are often not an accurate guide to scarcity, due to the numerous government and private meltings over the years.

You might want to pick up a copy of "A Guide Book to Peace Dollars" from Whitman Publishing (same company as the Red Book). The information is more up to date that Bowers' encyc which was published in 1991.
  • Thanks for the tip RWB , i was wondering what to write in this letter to Santa : )

  • if it is a D mint from 34 check for the doubled die. Not only it by far the best error of the set it has two clearly different rev's, one being pretty rare. I have the book above and have to say it's a great read, everything you need is in there
