Always being a 'lone eagle' I broke this tradition by joining the local coin club early this year. It has been a fun experience, meeting a new group of collectors at all levels and having someplace to go the first wednesday of the month.

The best experience by far was working the Philadelphia Whitman show with the club...manning the public registration desk.

This was a tough year for my coin collection. I let go of alot of old friends that I may never see again. But I was very pleased to obtain two mint state Spoot tokens. Mint state CWTs have been a side project of mine and these are really nice examples of a famous error. Whenever I run into one of the photographers who frequent this site, I will post them here.

Sort of spread out . . . . getting connections with a lot of Board members who have helped on the Doily Set. I've had great luck and a lot of help via the collectors here. This has been a recent collecting undertaking, so it certainly qualifies as 'this year', but I've added too many to isolate one particular instance.

My favorite of the year was flying out to Philly to photograph coins, portraits, and artifacts from the First US Mint at both the Mint and Independence Hall Museum for Len Augsburger's soon-to-be-released book. It was my second trip to photograph for the book, but this one coincided with my birthday and my family came into town, so after coins, I had the weekend with them.

<< <i>My favorite experience for 2010 was telling another local dealer to get out of my shop and to never come back.

I remember his words : "If I walk out of this shop, I won't be back" Then about two minutes later he was knocking on my door screaming "I forgot my keys". image I handed him his keys and said "good bye". >>

HAHAHAHAHAH I burst out laughing reading that.

I suppose a legit numismatic experience would be the discovery of the s-18 die variety for the 1858 LL Flying Eagle. That was pretty cool.

Upgrading this from a PCGS AU58 to MS62

    imageimage

However, then Laura "stole" it in the Baltimore sale for $316,250

There was never any doubt it would upgrade, the question was 61, 62 or 63?

<< <i>Just bought my last coin to complete my U.S./Philippine complete date set including the proofs.
Business strikes in PCGS; Proofs in PCGS and NGC. All but one coin are MS60 or better, which was my goal.
What a difficult goal it was . Some dates are flat out rare in UNC and not cleaned (as they like to do in the Philippines).
Several of the coins I waited decades to find.
I Bought my first one in 1975 last one 2010. Thirty -five years!

Slavering over some amazing pioneer and territorial gold that Kagin's had on display at the Santa Clara Convention Center a month back or so. Getting fired up about and spending a week or so poring through Holabird-Kagin's Bonanza auction catalog as a consequence.

Mine was working a table at a large coin show for the first time in my life. I've spent many, many hours on the buying side of the table but never before this year had I worked the other side. It was a very cool experience and hopefully the start of something big!

Some really great experiences in this post.
For me this year it has been two discoveries I made
and graded. One was a proof nickel that was previously
unknown that I cherry picked. The other was a IHC that has a
RPD with two graded examples and mine is one of them.
Its those little things that give me satisfaction.
This has been my first year as a member and I always had my local B&M send in my submissions and that is also a highlight for me

Attending my first BIG coin show (the ANA in Boston) and realizing first and foremost that is where I will save up my money to spend on the hobby for the next years to come. Don't get me wrong-smaller local shows are good, but having at ones ease hundreds of the best and brightest dealers in the world with inventories that make me salivate and wish for a winning lotto ticket is well worth waiting for each year. Having owned a coin that was part of Larry Shapiros set (1881-CC in 65PL) I always had a slight connection for and with him. Meeting him in person for the first time and getting a superb coin with an excellent payment option made the ANA show in Boston a crowning success and highlight of my year.

    Chance favors the prepared mind.

There have been so many wonderful early copper pieces to come to market in the last year or so. I am very pleased that all the great collections were graded by PCGS (and so were the owners when they sold).

We can't forget about this fantastic collection which is the subject of our video on the PCGS homepage The Cardinal Collection of US Large Cents

Acquiring one of the rarest gold medals from the 1893 Columbian Exposition. I was given the opportunity to buy this set from the family of the Secretary of the Columbian Exposition, Howard Owen Edmonds. This medal weighs in at 6.2 ounces of 22K gold, minted by Gorham. These pins and ribbons were worn by Mr. Edmonds at the Fair and are engraved with his name on the back.

For me, definitely the ANA Money Show in Fort Worth; I got my $3 and a Type II gold $1 there, but I also got to see in person for the first time many of the great numismatic legends and rarities, like two of the 1804 dollars and one of the 1913 Liberty nickels, as well as the quintuple Stella pattern. I got to see matte proof gold in person; photos do no justice to their radiant presence seen live.

<< My best guess is that my favorite numismatic experience of 2010 has yet to occur. >>

Aki getting you an 1815 $5 for Xmas?

RYK - Well, today Don Kagin and I went to view some coins at the Museum of Connecticut History. My first trip there. Ironically, there was an 1815 $5 on display in their small public display of coins. Aki offered to buy it for me, but also wanted to borrow my credit card. I declined his generous offer and thanked him with a Milk Bone.

Going to Capitol Steak House with Mr Willis at the last Baltimore show. It would have been high on my alltime list, but he did not offer to pay. I hope this reduces the suck-up factor somewhat.

    image

BTW: it's my recollection than discussion of coins/grading/markets ended when the wine list was presented.

    image

Okay, truth be told, it was when Andy bought me dinner and Aki batted clean-up. Those grilled cheese sandwichs were primo even if the pickle was a little bit disappointing.

In August of this past year, while assisting my friend,
Glenn Holsonbake, he was offered my nemisis date: 1901-S Half.

    Although I had another MS 63, it was just a little too dipped out for my liking;
The new 01-S is by far a more original piece.

A tad late to the thread, but with good reason. The favorite numismatic experience of last year was entering into purchase negotiations with the owner of an ultra rare Morgan VAM, which when acquired for my set will blow away the current Registry set ranking for the particular set involved. image
