of numismatic and quasi-numismatic items that may have otherwise slipped under the radar?

Consider the "speared bison", reverse of 07 2008 SAEs, Carr products, first spouses (initially, anyway), and the like.

Yes, and I think there has been a resurgance of the First Spouse series due to Eric's book and talk of their low final mintages in the "mint monster thread," and don't forget the 4 coin liberty subset of the FS series, too.

I think they already had legs before they hit the forum.

Expanding on the MPLs, there was a period that you could not open the registry forum without 5-10 threads on the front page dealing with MPLs.

Daniel Carr's fantasy restrikes, and medals for sure...
  • SCD, MPL. We need a TLA glossary.
  • Don't forget gold dollars. They seemed to really start to move after Ambro started buying almost every coin he saw for sale. I'm sure more than a few readers joined him in buying up the small coins. For coins with limited supply, just a few new collectors willing to stretch can have an impact. For every active person who posts, there are usually ten more reading along that hardly ever post.

For some U. S. mint issues, readers and posters on this forum might well represent 10%+ of the active buying power. For some of the tokens or fantasy pieces, the forum might be 50% or more of the market. That's enough muscle to move prices. The most obvious example is the latest DCarr product. Without this forum it would likely have never have taken off. As others have pointed out, Carr has made enough money to buy a decent house from the profits off his latest creation.

  • Save for a couple very specific examples, no.
  • In some cases the Forum has had a positive effect on some recent mint errors and varieties such as the 2008 ASE. In the case of the WI Extra Leaf quarters, 99% of the Forum chatter for these modern classics in the last 4-5 years have been a Huge Negative Poo Poo. As if the Forum, major coin error organizations, graduates of the School of Potter and the like have discarded the WI coins as serious numismatic material. For the handful of WI Die Hards, all the negative slurs and an early promotion in AZ having died a natural death, the coins can be acquired at what a few of us feel are depressed prices. For that, I thank the Forum and others for talking down these neat modern varieties and allowing several collectors to complete their Statehood Quarter collections at bargain prices. On the bright side, The Forum has been a great source for discussions of future mint releases and trends. Everyone have a Merry Christmas and may your Christmas stocking be full of neat collector coins !!

I agree. People on these boards like to kick around Longacre, but I am delighted to say I have never started a thread about MPLs (other than to ask about the status of what was clearly a well-managed promotion).

I will say more collectors know about three cent Feuchtwangers than ever before, thanks to this forum.

I'd say that Mid Grade Barbers are a CU Forum thing, I have now sold 3 on eBay, and I do believe that the last one (Last night) went to a board member.
