1894-S BARBER DIME

I think there are 9 "accounted for" but maybe 11 that have been certified/graded?...according to the 100 Greatest Coins Book.
What do they look like in their holders? Photos?
Where are they? Who owns them?
What is the price history? Most recent sales?
What is the approximate grade of all examples?
What is the most recent/largest gathering of these together?
I am just trying to gather some information in anticipation of purchasing one....one day.
It's the Holidays, we are allowed to dream, right?

Yup, just read through it all. Love it! It certainly answers many questions. But I am guessing none have sold since 2005.
Any CURRENTLY KNOWN owners?
Anyone around here held one of these things?

We've handled quite a few in recent years and in fact, we have sold the finest-known in private treaty sales twice since the Heritage auction.
If you're looking for one at the moment, we could probably work something out for you as well.
That being said, check out the write up on our website at:
David Lawrence Rare Coins
There's a nice little history of the dime there (taken from our book written by David and John Feigenbaum) and some history regarding recent sales.
There's also a humorous article from the San Francisco Chronicle regarding the last sale of the dime if you're trying to be throrough.

I really like both links. Thanks. In regards to the San Fran Article, I think I would have taken it out in Starbucks though.
Thanks for posting. If I ever win the lotto, I will give you a call.

Rick Kelly and Nancy Oliver have done a lot of research on the topic as well. There are a few pages on the subject in ther book "A Mighty Fortress."

<< <i>I'm sure Legend has sold one over the course of their business! >>
They sold the one that Capt. mentioned below in good condition back in the early 90s iirc. I believe they have also handled at least one higher specimen since then.
<< <i>TDN I believe had one.

Nope - always wanted one, tho
Wouldn't mind owning the Brown/Kagin specimen !!

<< <i>I used to work at Coin World with Jim Johnson, who owned the one in Good condition. For a while he owned the only complete set of Barber Dimes in circulated condition.

I'd like to own that coin!

Of course.
Had to take the plug out of the 1894-S hole, however.

It is (or was) PCGS graded Good-04. It was sold in a B&M auction in 1990 or so. A decade or so earlier, it was auctioned by the firm of Steve Ivy
Speety << [Legend] sold the one that Capt. mentioned below in Good condition back in the early 90s iirc. >>
Not as far as I know, Legend has handled at least three other 1894-S dimes, all of which are discussed in my article that is cited below.
DavE << Laura told me they sold the Fair 2 coin to a collector 20 years ago. She assembled two sets now that are complete. The Law/Simpson Collection has a PR66 and is a complete GEM collection. She also bought and sold the PR64 for a world class buyer of classic rarities.>>
Circa 1991, Laura sold an 1894-S dime that is (or was) NGC graded AG-03. I have not seen it, though I have carefully examined a majority of the known 1894-S dimes, including all of those that have been certified as grading 62 or higher. I am not aware of the Simpson 1894-S ever having been in the Law collection. This 1894-S was an unnamed consignment to Heritage’s Jan. 12, 2005 Platinum Night event. It was then PCGS certified Proof-65; Laura was the successful bidder. She placed it in the Simpson collection. Shortly after this Jan. 2005 auction, the Simpson 1894-S was NGC certified as “Proof-66.” In my opinion, 65 is the correct grade for this coin.
In July 2007, I put forth what I believe is the first serious attempt at a condition ranking. At the time, I, and also John Feigenbaum, believed that the 1894-S dime that Kagin’s sold years earlier was the same as one of the others on the list. In a matter of weeks, however, the Kagin coin showed up and was sold in an October 2007 Stack’s auction. In a sense, it was a re-discovery of a coin that was already known. Previously, it was incorrectly thought to be the same as another 1894-S dime. There are ten known 1894-S dimes, and maybe one or two others.
Understanding the Auction Record For an 1894-S dime - 10/23/07
Which are the finest 1894-S Dimes? 07/31/07
I was the underbidder (for a customer) on a marvelous one (ex: JAS?) in a Stacks sale in the very late 80's (210-230K+juice range?) that showed up within a year or so in a Heritage sale and seem to recall the buyer made close to 100K on the piece.
I'm fuzzy on details of some coins I didn't buy. If I'm wrong on auction records please let me know. I've already lost most of the 60's. I'd like to get as much as possible of the 80's back.
Iin 1989-90 a blind monkey with cash, cojones, and good cash flow management might have done quite well.
How's that for serving up a big fat pitch over the center of the plate at 70 MPH.
Please abstain from swinging at that ball right now, Andy, and I'll give you a $5 discount on the next story about that special needs dealer we know. Aki would approve. Didn't I give him 1/2 my steak last time?
