House approves tax bill

derrybderryb Posts: 36,993 ✭✭✭✭✭
House lawmakers approved a two-year across-the-board extension of Bush-era tax cuts just before midnight on Thursday, capping off weeks of furious debate and ensuring that rates won't rise on virtually all Americans come Jan. 1. The bill, already passed by the Senate, now goes to President Barack Obama for signature. It also includes a 2% rollback of Social Security payroll taxes; extends unemployment insurance for 13 months; and brings back the estate tax at 35% for two years on estates of more than $5 million. The House vote was 277-148

MILWAUKEE -- A 70-year-old Milwaukee man is accused of killing his 50-year-old cousin over some stolen cigarettes.

According to a criminal complaint, Orteal Tyler shot and killed Mark Chambers on Sunday night inside the home they shared at 24th Street and Hampton Avenue.

Investigators said Tyler became angry when he found cigarettes missing from the pack he left on the kitchen table.

Tyler told police he and Chambers often fought over money and he believed Chambers had taken the cigarettes and he "couldn't take it anymore."

A medical examiner's report showed Chambers died of seven gunshot wounds.

They need to eliminate the child tax credit. Time for those using the public school system to pay up and stop relying on those that don't use it to pay for it.

goingbroke, you could be living in California, my property taxes went down. property taxes in some states are obscene compared to CA. yours do.

here they are set to 1.25% or something close to that of the price you pay for your home and they are reassesed downward only. so if you bought your house 50 years ago, you might be paying $800 a year and live in a $1,000,000 home at today's market. and that is family transferrable, so there were a few champagne parties in my old hood, too.

it's one reason why CA is messed up, not the only one, not the primary one but i think a top 5.

we have Happy Cows, here and better weather, that's about it though.

I got news for you! I live in a rural area, my home is zoned agricultural and still had to pay that high bill!. I don't even have any kids to send to the school here. They decided that the school needed a new wing and all the teachers needed a raise. Meanwhile my neighbor that has been on unemployment 2 years with 5 kids is enjoying his $1000. per child tax credits and his monthly food stamps. and his utility assistance check not to mention they just extended his unemployment checks! and he just renewed his green card (HE IS A HAPPY MAN) America gata love it!

My inlaws property tax alone for their house in Thornwood NY, which is about the size of our house in GA (not big), is more than our entire years worth of mortgage and property tax payments. I think our tax was $1200ish, with a +$300 bump (once/2 years) for them now adding our garbage collection to it as they (county) took over all the private trash collection. Theirs was something like 15 grand.
  • yeah, we live in a $200,000 house...nothing fancy right outside of town.... no kids old enough for school yet, runs us about 1,300 a year.......i guess that's not too bad afterall image

I don't collect Social Security. Why do I have to pay that? Time for those old geezers to pay for their own retirements. I'll never get a dime out of SS by the time I retire.

Mobile homes are taxed at a vehicle rate in my state. I'm thinking of connecting about six of them around a swimming pool.

As soon as I read the post by Goingbroke I figured he had to live in WI. I also live in WI and just had an 18% property tax increase. I also
live in a small town, currently have to pay nearly 5,000 a year for a 240,000 house. crazy. We don't even live in one of the communities with
high taxes in WI. As I was digging through the last foot of snow we got I was really questioning what I was doing here.
  • Twas the night before Christmas in the White House
Not a creature was stirring, not even the louse
The stockings where hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that more money soon would be there
Obama was nestled all snug in his bed
While visions of unemployed danced in his head
Michelle in her 'kerchief, and Barack in Mao cap
Had just settled down for their long winter nap
When on the front lawn there arose such a clatter
Barack crawled from his bed to see what's the matter
Away to the window he made a quick dash
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash
When what to his watery eyes should appear
But an old clunker sleigh and eight sickly reindeer
Santa said not a word, but continued his works
Stacking up earmarks and lobbyists’ perks
Santa looked straight at Obama and finally spoke
Thanks to you, Mr. President, now I'm flat broke
It took my life savings to pay my tax bill
And what I have left is just next to nil
I can't even afford to light up Rudolph’s red nose
With a flip of one finger up the chimney Santa rose
Then Santa exclaimed as he flew through the rain
Oh, how I wish our President's name was McCain

    What's in the tax bill

Expanded child tax credit: $90 billion The bill will retain the $1,000 child tax credit (up from $500 before the Bush tax cuts). It also will retain the reduced-earnings threshold, which allows more people to claim the credit as refundable.

A refundable tax credit is one paid to a tax filer even if the value of the credit exceeds his tax liability. So if a filer doesn't owe any federal income tax but qualifies for the credit, it is paid to him in the form of a refund.

Not only a credit but a refundable tax credit.

and ensuring that rates won't rise on virtually all Americans

    All Americans????
  • A South Carolina retiree has sent the cash-strapped state of California a $10,000 check as a token of appreciation for the unemployment benefits he received while living there nearly five decades ago.

Receipt of the check from Dennis Ferguson, 74, bearing his notation "REPAYMENT FOR WHAT CALIF. DID FOR ME!", was announced on Thursday by state Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who said the money would go to public schools as required by California law.

"It's appropriate this money will go to educate our kids, because there's a lesson to be learned here about what it means to have a sense of shared sacrifice and commitment to the common good," Lockyer said in a statement.

Ferguson said he collected jobless benefits for about four months in 1964 after being laid off at age 26 from his job as an engineer at aerospace company Douglas Aircraft, according to the treasurer's office.

His benefits during that period would have totaled about $1,100, it said.

Ferguson told the state in a note accompanying his check that he wanted to show his gratitude for the benefits by adding "interest" to his repayment, deciding that $10,000 was a "nice round figure," the treasurer's office said.

Ferguson said the assistance helped him go back to school, where he earned a certificate in computer programing that helped him start a new career and get back on his feet.

"Anyone who is helped out when they are down ought to give something back, especially now that California has budget problems," said Ferguson, who now lives in South Carolina.

His check is a drop in a bucket compared with a state budget deficit expected to top $25 billion by the next fiscal year that starts in July, but state officials were nevertheless grateful for his gesture.

"It's very rare for folks to say, 'Hey, I'm going to help the state of California out, and give them some of my money,'" said Tom Dresslar, a spokesman for the treasurer's office.
