Is this a bad time to start an Auction?

Just wanted to know if starting an ebay auction which ends right before or right after Xmas is a bad idea.

Think ending just after is fine. Some people have $$ for gifts that they are looking to spend. Just be sure to put a minimum bid that you're willing to accept on your item and you can't get hurt. I have a bunch of BIN jerseys up now and there is no rhyme or reason to when people are buying them. 3am, 3pm, Cali., Hawaii, Conn, I've seen it all at this point. Some are up for just hours, some 10 days before selling, some go almost up to their 30 day limit, others don't sell. The exposure can't hurt, just CYA with a minimum.

I wouldnt start one now. I ran a 99 cent auction for a vintage Non-Sports PSA 8 (nice following for a non sports set). It ended last night. Final selling price?? $2.50. It cost more to get it graded than the card brought. So, if you HAVE to start an auction, start it at the least you are willing to take....

You just figured this out last night?

Well...I had seen a competitor (BBCE) selling the same cards in the same grades run 99 cents auctions and he had gotten acceptable prices. Nothing great mind you, but nothing as abysmal as my card sold for..... so, I thought the same bidders would see my card. Apparently, they did not. I would just as soon keep the card than sell it for a couple of bucks....

I'm starting about 10 auctions next week to end on 12-28. That should be fun.

hmmm. let's examine this for a moment.

choice A) Being stuck at the airport while getting jostled about by strangers in a hurry who possess electronic gadgets and guns. Then, there's the TSA.

choice B) Hanging out on the Internet wondering if there's anyone alive out there.

choice C) Drinking heavily, THEN, and only then should you consider listing goods on eBay.

then, in short order, you LOL because the people who are on their way to visit you are "A", you visit "B" and discover that your relatives are "A" when you start receiving e-mails from the airport, then you "C" and LOL again because those relatives at the airport might have some extra time on their hands to shill up your auctions and will probably never make it to your place, anyways.

    everyone wins.

Kruk auctions do very well right around the holidays, especially the Curt Schilling auctions.

Mexpo, there are no listing fees until January 7th regardless of starting price, so there is nothing to lose if you just want to start your auctions at your minimum acceptable price. If they sell, great, if not, then you'll have no skin in the game.
  • what is shilling?

It depends what you're selling. If it's modern baseball, it's a very bad time unless that player just signed a big contract or got traded. If it's vintage baseball, it's a great time for the type of cards that people purchase on impulse (Mantle, Koufax, etc.). If it's basketball or football, it's a good time.
