I did that as an undergrad, but since I have been back in the hobby-industry I have not thought of leaving again.

No. I take breaks now and then.

I already did it once. I stopped actively collecting in 1986, and sold my collection about 1989 or 1990. I wish I hadn't, because I started collecting again in 1999. -Preussen

Only parts of it in order to put it towards something else in the collection.

Once or twice a year I get tired of collecting and feel like getting out. I usually just step back and take a breath. It goes away.

No, but I do shift my focus from time to time, and part time dealing keeps it fresh for me also.

I've actually done this. I don't regret it one bit.

I walked away for about 8 years, kept the core of the collection but didn't add to it or even look at it much. Then about 2006 I got the bug again and started activly adding to the collection.

I do not think about selling, although my purchases are way down from years past. I have been on a gun buying binge the last few months.

Not really, but from time to time I'll "hibernate" from active collecting for a while, and focus more on research and writing.

No, but I am always thinking of ways to keep fewer, nicer coins and that means selling from time to time.

  • Yes I have. It's on my mind a lot right now since I just turned 62. I have no one to leave it to and have no one that is interested in my collection so why go to the "Great Bourse in the Sky" and just leave it up for grabs. I have put a lot of time, love, and money into the collection in the last 15 years and would hate to know it fell into the hands of someone that knows nothing about coins.

I think about it but I haven't done it - yet. Right now I am just thinking about a major culling operation.
  • Yes, I sold almost everything about 4 years ago.

Same here! Almost the same dates/timeframes too! Scary.

Sold all my coins back in '89 and started collecting antique Winchester lever action rifles. The guns got sold around 2002/03 while preparing for the move to Australia (didn't want to deal with the paperwork and severely restrictive gun laws here) and started collecting coins again.

Sure wish I had my original collection back, I couldn't afford to replace it today.

Have sold several times over the last 30 years or so, never walked away. Just started over, smarter.

My first goal was to complete my set which I did. I have thought about selling off a majority of my collection but only so I could use the money to upgrade what I think is the top five or ten in the series. However, I have been thinking of trying to complete another set but have not decided what I would enjoy collecting the most.

<< <i>I have thought of selling, but not walking away. I often wonder what the hobby would feel like without owning any coins------------------------BigE >>

i did exactly that. sold all my gold coins and used the money elsewhere. i kept
a lowball coin, horded wheat pennies, misc silver coins (bullion), and other things
that did not require security to keep.

but i stayed in the hobby. in the sense of reading these forums, checking out
ebay/heritage/stacks/etc... when i am in the mood but i am not buying anything.

it was just getting too expensive. buy a coin, look at it for a few weeks, and then
toss it into the safety deposit box to sit. not exactly fun after a while. everything
i wanted just kept going up in cost and i decided i wanted out because i knew
i did not have whale money and the coin money was better spent somewhere else.
Plus this hobby seemed to revolve around getting a "fix" every once in a
while... "fix" meaning buying a coin or it got "boring".

i get all the action (except owning physical coins) but feel no need to "buy stuff".
plus there is no stress. now it feels like a real hobby.
  • I have never even thought about it like that.
That sounds like something a golfer would do??
I think every collector may come to a point where
they may want to sell so there familys are not burdened with the process. I guess anyone can get burned out on anything
but I just put my stuff in the safe and work on one of my other projects when I get frustrated.

Sold 99.99% of it once and walked away for nearly 3 years. Back now and refocused on my Dansco 7070.

  • Didn,t sell any of my collection, but walked away twice in my life.

1st time whole collection stolen, to crushed to start again. 2nd was a self imposed break that lasted 5 years.

This is exactly why I am selling now. Walk completely away. Probably not. I can't stop buying stuff.
