Walker Proof Digital Album Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I already did it once. I stopped actively collecting in 1986, and sold my collection about 1989 or 1990. I wish I hadn't, because I started collecting again in 1999. -Preussen
"Illegitimis non carborundum" -General Joseph Stilwell. See my auctions
I walked away for about 8 years, kept the core of the collection but didn't add to it or even look at it much. Then about 2006 I got the bug again and started activly adding to the collection.
Yes I have. It's on my mind a lot right now since I just turned 62. I have no one to leave it to and have no one that is interested in my collection so why go to the "Great Bourse in the Sky" and just leave it up for grabs. I have put a lot of time, love, and money into the collection in the last 15 years and would hate to know it fell into the hands of someone that knows nothing about coins.

Collect for the love of the hobby, the beauty of the coins, and enjoy the ride.

Same here! Almost the same dates/timeframes too! Scary.
Sold all my coins back in '89 and started collecting antique Winchester lever action rifles. The guns got sold around 2002/03 while preparing for the move to Australia (didn't want to deal with the paperwork and severely restrictive gun laws here) and started collecting coins again.
Sure wish I had my original collection back, I couldn't afford to replace it today.

You could leave it to me, I'm interested!

My first goal was to complete my set which I did. I have thought about selling off a majority of my collection but only so I could use the money to upgrade what I think is the top five or ten in the series. However, I have been thinking of trying to complete another set but have not decided what I would enjoy collecting the most.

i did exactly that. sold all my gold coins and used the money elsewhere. i kept a lowball coin, horded wheat pennies, misc silver coins (bullion), and other things that did not require security to keep.
but i stayed in the hobby. in the sense of reading these forums, checking out ebay/heritage/stacks/etc... when i am in the mood but i am not buying anything.
it was just getting too expensive. buy a coin, look at it for a few weeks, and then toss it into the safety deposit box to sit. not exactly fun after a while. everything i wanted just kept going up in cost and i decided i wanted out because i knew i did not have whale money and the coin money was better spent somewhere else. Plus this hobby seemed to revolve around getting a "fix" every once in a while... "fix" meaning buying a coin or it got "boring".
i get all the action (except owning physical coins) but feel no need to "buy stuff". plus there is no stress. now it feels like a real hobby.
I have never even thought about it like that. That sounds like something a golfer would do?? I think every collector may come to a point where they may want to sell so there familys are not burdened with the process. I guess anyone can get burned out on anything but I just put my stuff in the safe and work on one of my other projects when I get frustrated.
Give the laziest man the toughest job and he will find the easiest way to get it done.

This is a really interesting perspective. Thank you for sharing it. You've given me something to think about.

This is exactly why I am selling now. Walk completely away. Probably not. I can't stop buying stuff.
