SMR

Does anyone receive this magazine at home? I just got into the PSA thing and am wondering about getting it. Or, if anyone has any back copies, I would love to take a look.

I am more than happy to pay for a couple if anyone has them.

Thanks,

Rob

After reading the Billy Williams thread, I guess the VCP is the way to go? How does one obtain that? I am seriously lost and in over my head here.

SMR which stands for Sports Marketing Report is a magazine issued by PSA, Professional Sports Authenticator. You can easily obtain a subscription by going to the PSA home page and surfing a bit. Having said that, beware that which you seek!!! Depending upon what you collect, the SMR data can be woefully obsolete. The general premise of the SMR is to provide the reader with "current market conditon" prices for a given card. There is no way on this earth PSA can possibly keep up with each and every card that is bought and sold and provide valid data to subscribers with which to make valid buying decisions. I could give you many, many examples, but I'm too weary of writing about this issue.

VCP, Vintage Card Prices, at the address found above me, is by far the most accurate pricing data you will find...BAR NONE. How so? VCP collects current sales data on a daily basis from not only eBay sales, but auction houses as well. It gathers this data and updates its database continually to show historical sales data on a SLEW of cards and then some.

The SMR by the way is rife with advertisements and as always has a column written by Joe Orlando about cards and collecting in general.

My advice? Depending on how deep you plan to get into collecting, which can indeed be fun and challenging, VCP will provide you the pricing data you need for current market conditions which will enable you to estimate how much you may want to pay for a card you may be interested in. The site is easy to use and provides you the opportunity to create a "wants list" which will notify you via email if a card you have placed into your wants list is available. It ain't cheap, but what price valid info?

Pls do not ask me about the Population Report, in time you will learn about the fallacies contained within.

    GL in you collecting endeavors.

SMR has really interesting article about vintage sets, players, and collectors in every issue. None of the magazines like Beckett do a good job writing about the hobby in my opinion. I think SGC puts out a publication though that might be similar to SMR. I wouldn't care if SMR dropped the pricing section in order to add another article about collecting, in fact I would like it that much better. I am probably different tan most though, I collect because I love the history and the hobby, not to make money.

SGC no longer publishes that magazine- it's been taken over by Novocent and Partners. Well worth the $20 subscription fee.
Agreed on SMR dropping the pricing info, it does much more harm than good.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

I totally agree. I would love to see extra articles and less on the pricing section.
