Tamron 90mm Macro Lens, What are your thoughts? Went with Canon 100mm instead.

Batman23Batman23 Posts: 4,999 ✭✭✭✭✭
My Wife is looking for a Macro Lens for her Cannon 50D SLR camera. She was looking at the Tamron AF 90mm f/2.8 Di SP A/M 1:1 Macro. She asked me what I thought, since I like to photograph coinsimage.

I did a search here but I see listed mostly the Sigma 105mm and the 150mm.

What is your thoughts of the Tamron 90mm? Do you have a better suggestion for a similar price?

Edited: I just paid the extra and got the name brand Canon in 100mm Macro. Seems to work good, images posted below.

that's my guy and I love it. you'd better invest in a camera stand before or at the same time you get the lens....
    also, mgoodman's book!

not my image... dollarish sized, just to give perspective.

find a place that rents them for a day and get used to playing with it.

For the price, get a Canon EF 100mm USM or the Sigma. Either one will be better quality than the Tamron.

I just bought a gently used Canon for under $400.

I understand Tamron is a quality brand name. As for me, I bought the Sigma 105mm. I think it's a matter of preference and you couldn't go wrong with either!

    Cheers!

I've had mine a year now no issues, no complains about AF or motor sounds, sluggishness, etc.. Dont know what experience Ank has with Tam that he'd take a shot at 'em.

    O well.

Ive tried both canon and tamron, just have had better image quality with canon. Give it a shot, maybe it was the specific lens I used.
For about the same price, I would prefer the canon.

I use a Tamron, never had an issue. I think you will find Tamron and Sigma very similar.

The tamron has been always regarded as a good lens. I don't have any personal experience with it though.

My wife says that Canon is high quality but your paying extra money for little gain. She says that she thinks that Tamron would be better quality than Sigma. I don't know the difference between any of them.

I do have Mark's book thoughimage

There seems to be a lot of great stuff said about the Canon 100mm. Amazon has the Canon at $520 and the Tamron at $440 plus another $50 rebate. So my next question would be is $130 extra worth it for the Canon?

If the lenses are the same length probably not

$130 extra would influence me, especially if you cannot distinguish any quality difference between the two! $130 equates to quality/value over price, considering two equal-value options!

    Cheers!

I think that the Tamron 90mm is a little close for coin photography, but I think that it is a matter of what you are willing to spend. I have the Nikon 105mm and the Tamron 180mm SP 3.5 Macro. I find that they offer the same quality photo, but the Tamron offers much more light on the coin. The longer the focal length the better lighting you will have on the surface of the coin. -Dan

The Tamron is highly rated on the Pentax forums (where I sometimes hang out), take a look.

I just bought a used Tamron 90 (non DI) for $200 and it works great. If you're buying a new macro lens, Tamron, Tokina, and Sigma are all in the same ball park pricing wise. Tokina seems to have the smallest discounts.

If you have to have Canon check out their refurbished inventory, I just got a T1i and it looks and acts brand new.
