What a tome the Std Catalog of BBC is!

WoW. Friday I was browsing through the Borders store which is closing next month in downtown Portland (OR). With 40% off I figured I'd see what was still available. Lo and behold, staring at me face out on a bookshelf was the 2011 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. When I went to pull it off the shelf I about killed myself as the huge volume came off the shelf. The thing is HUGE! I've always been curious as to what it looked like since it, or similar reference books, have been mentioned here before. Having a "type" collection, I thought this would prove to be an invaluable resource for me as I track down cards I need. The price was right!

Here's a picture of the book next to a standard baseball card price guide:

I have a 40% off coupon for Borders ... so the book would cost me less than $30.00 including tax. Maybe I'll take a ride to Borders tomorrow and buy myself a Christmas present.

The 2010 edition of the Standard Guide only had cards up to 2008, with 2001 - 2008 on a CD. Even then, they missed some newer sets.

Huge catalog! I got mine off Amazon. Great reference, but, as with all price guides, not too useful in some areas. Prices many time much too high compared to the real world.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

  • Cool! I was just browsing through The Tome and found a reference to my 1960's Standard Oil promotion pieces which nails them down to 1968. It's great to see the entire set availability (baseball only) and relative prices/scarcity of what I have. Here's an example of the promotion which I've shared here before:

TBP, I am having fun just reading those writeups and the story behind some of the sets. A great resource!

Haha I thought everyone had one of the SCD "Big Books"

How can you collect blindly?? Thats just crazy!!!

I have bought mine every years and chop out all the post 1980 stuff, reattach the index and Minor League section and its exactly 1" thick. Im getting good at it, you cant even tell its been chopped unless you look at print on the spine.

Amazon has it every day for $29.69, anyone who pays the cover price is wasting $$.

    Mike,

You're going to love the Catalog for working on your Senators type set...especially for the pre-WWII stuff.

I have the 2009 edition, and it has been a great help to me as I build my own type set for the White Sox.

Frank, I think you posted that on the old Full Count board years ago, and I've done it every time. Sure makes carrying it around a shows much easier.

Funny, just bought an un-used 2009 edition off ebay for $8 dlvd. Very excited to get it. Don't collect modern, so don't care if its a year off. This isn't 1988 where vintage prices double every month. image

I went to Borders yesterday and picked up my own copy. Price is $45.00, but I had a 50% off coupon from Borders. So I got mine for under $25.00. Man, what a great reference book. After going thru it for just a short while I have a feeling this book is going to COST me money, as I'd like to get one example of a lot of those sets!

I bought mine off of ebay (Item number: 150505763612 ) for $27.99 delivered.
  • Bob Lemke, any new updates on the E90-1 reverse border shaded variation?

very interesting finding, when you take all the shaded variations and line them up, they have the same style and colors on the front (in a very varied set that is)...this is indicative of a separate print run which is meaningful in this set!

Based on my own examination of the issue, and with input of other, more experienced, E-collectors, the E90-1 "reverse shaded border" cards are not being listed in the Standard Catalog at this time.

1990 Donruss has two different border styles, one was issued in packs and the other was issued in factory sets. Will this variation ever be noted in the catalog?

This variation appears in other issues from Donruss, I believe in 88 & 89.

I have the 2007 version. My wife rolls her eyes each time I pull it out. I can spend hours flipping pages. It is a wonderful reference.

    Keep up the good work!

    i like that qualifier....

Bob, you have seen these "shaded" cards i sent you....what if, when you looked at the fronts, they were all very similar style ,color cards...wouldnt this be too much a coincidence to call it a random printing error? wouldnt it be indicative of a group of cards ( a series) that was created at the same time (by a dirty prinitng press), distinquishing it from other cards...not to mention the "common" cards in the set NEVER have shaded backs, only the scarcer ones?

on the net54 board, we discussed the backs only, but nobody (besides myself) has bothered to turn these shaded versions over and look at the front and VOILA..it all makes sense!!!!

    Joey,
The various pack vs. factory differences in 1980s-1990s Donruss are probably worth noting in the set introductions . . . but my contributions are currently limited to pre-1981 content.

    Scott,
Since the "shaded back" E90-1s can each apparently be found with varying degrees of shading in various locations on the bakcs, they would be impossible to catalog, regardless of the cause.
