1915 CJ recent pickup with a question

Hey guys,

Just picked this up for my son for Christmas as a "type card" that I get him one or two of each year. I love the card and noticed the stain on the back on the auction so I knew what I was getting. But after having at in hand, I'm curious. Seems to me that the stain is the only thing that keeps this card a 4. No wrinkles or anything else that I can find.

Just wondering if this is a common thing with these cards, or if it is something else. Seems it must be uncommon to hurt the grade as it did.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Chad

Sweet card, Chad. I've experienced it with a few of these CJ's that they look incredibly nice for their grades. Here are two of mine that have gotten similarly-lower grades than you would think from the appearance, and I'm not 100% sure as to why either. But just keeping buying the card and not the holder, and you'll be good to go!

Chad- that is a paste stain, not a Cracker Jack stain. I suspect that is what caused the downgrade.

In '15 CJ offered an album in a send away offer, the cards could be pasted into it. The backs were printed upside down so that if they were pasted where yours was the card could be tipped up and the bio info could be viewed.
'14's are not printed in this way.

Here's the album, sans the tie that held the binding together

Great card, Mullen was always one of my favorites in this set.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Cracker Jacks are amazing cards, no matter the condition. Closest I'll probably ever get to them is the set that Topps put out in '04.
  • I was sure it looked like a paste, but had no idea about the album. That is very cool to see.

I agree on the buy the card, not the holder on this one and the others posted. I could really lose focus and buy a few of these, as the price is right for them.

    Thanks for the help guys.

The OP's card was removed from a scrapbook, thats why the lower grade than you would expect.
The stain is not a product stain. Most E145-2 cards were never in boxes of Cracker Jacks to begin with, they were obtained as a complete set from the company (see offer on back).

The 1914 E145-1 cards ONLY came in boxes of Cracker Jacks.
