Or maybe those who go to the trouble to ask questions in advance (as opposed to after the fact) tend to have lower return rates. >>

not for me, I already wrote they don't...they're high maintenance people...I'm not a dealer, and just like to get my extras sold. >>

And how easy do you think it is to sell an MS64 Morgan for $1000? Are you going to block everyone who asks questions in advance, and those who don't ask questions and then return the coin, instead?

I can only imagine the lynch mob, forum outrage against an unknown seller if a forum member started a thread here. And in it, he complained about the unfairness of his having been blocked as a bidder, based solely on his having asked a question or for additional images of a coin. image

As usual, Feldini gave very good perspective and advice.

Folks with an established retail business need to be very considered in responding to head-scratching issues. I know of one dealer prominent amongst the forumites here who responded patiently to a then new customer from eBay. This person turned out to be just a noob with whale money. The other dealers who dealt with this whale, before folks knew he was a whale, treated him poorly and dumped stuff on him.

Yes, this is a rare success story when dealing with the retail public. However, most of the advice-givers in this thread aren't in the same situation as Larry.

I think they are as good or better than 95% of the websites out there. Many sites use scans or worse.

I got this question from an Ebayer asking for this:

    Larry,

Would you please send some pics taken with light from a northern exposure window ??

Why would he want this ? He seems to be irritated that I haven't knocked a hole in my northern wall to install a window and do what he wants image

Here is the coin in question.

<< <i>Would you guys be so tough on the person making the request if he had merely asked something to the effect of: "Dear seller, could you send me other images which show the coin without direct light on it?"?

That, very well, might be what he was seeking. He was polite and asked about a coin that is listed at approximately 19.9 times bid. I sure wouldn't block him based on that, and depending on my time and my mood, would probably try to accommodate him. >>

I never like to agree with Mark, but if you are going to sell on ebay you are going to get people like this. If i needed the money i would try to accomadate the person. Looking at your last 200 feedbacks you only have a couple of sales over 100 bucks and a few close to a 100 bucks. Selling a bunch of pcgs calanders and slab boxes with a very modern nickels and whatnot does not mean a lot to a guy that may shell out over a grand on faith the coin is not juiced. I do not care what any sellers return policy is, it can be a time consuming hassle to say the least. The world of ebay does not know that you are a well known dealer, and a forum member of pcgs to boot. Add that to your ebay listings and you would not get these request.image

  • Todds photos are shot with the idea of presenting the coin in it's best light, but without resorting to any gimmickery. I sell things with his pics all the time. When someone has asked, I tell him the photo is a good representation and that they can return it if they don't like it.

Many toned coins need to be turned at an angle to really appreciate their color or reflective quality, how do you shoot one of those? With it's worst foot forward? I think not.

He sounds like a jerk. But, since your auction is technically in violation of ebay's rules and can be nuked -- you must show the front and back of the slab, why don't you shoot two more and add them? From a northern exposure, of course.

For sale is a 1884-O Morgan Dollar PCGS MS64 w/ rainbow toning! Beautiful obverse rainbow toning with aquas, reds, oranges and purples! Truly unique! See pics for the magnificent detail!

Nothing is said here about whether the coin has flash or luster. Nothing about the strike or why the coin grades MS64? IMO, from the picture, the coin looks subdued, something with more toning than luster and that could be a problem with the asking price. Sure, we can all assume that the buyer can spend half his life making the trips to the PO, supporting them with every coin he might buy but additional information can be invaluable with buying coins and cut down on those costs and time.

PCGS Price guide for 1884-O in MS64 is $75. I suppose if I made an offer of $100 I'd be laughed at. All I can say is Wow! 15 times Price Guide is a heckuva premium for colorful tarnish! image

    DieClash,
Someone who buys this coin..is buying a piece of art..not really a coin.
I think this coin is underpriced comparred to other sites that sell toned coins at many more multiples than I do.
There is a small market for toners, but these guys know what they are doing, and pay what they think the coin is worth.
People who just deal in white coins, don't understand toners, and should stay away from them.
The person who asked for northern exposure called me as I requested.
We talked for about 30 minutes, and I assured him that he will like the coin,or he gets his money back.
I told him I will do my best to take some pics when I get the coin back from CAC.

The question is one that I would scratch my head on and likely take as someone being funny or sarcastic. I would tread lightly with any response in case they are a bit "out there".

That said, some of the responses by people in this thread show me that I wouldn't want to even attempt buying from them as any question is enough to be on their blockable list. These same sellers like that are likely the ones that are the major PITAs themselves when it comes to them being the buyers.

I've been known to ask questions, in order to try to make sure the coin is better suited for me so I don't have to worry about a return. I hate to return coins (maybe 4-6 in the last 8 years...not including a handful or two back to the mint for sub-standard products) and would prefer to ask a question right up front. The coins I asked questions about, and still purchased, are ones I largely kept. Saved me from returns and the sellers from getting returns. Win-win.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I have sold several hundred items on Ebay over the past eight years.

I usually ignore strange requests, like shipping to really odd places, etc.

I think that this would qualify as a strange request.

    Larry,

I'm inclined to take your advice and stay away. Don't get me wrong, I find certain toning quite attractive on coins, but I have no inclination to pay those kind of multiples of list for colorful ocins. I'm glad you've found a niche market for these.

    Cheers!

This coin is not priced high enough for "moon" pictures. You got to exceede bid by 20 times, not 19.9 to get to moon pics.
