MBMiller25's TTM and IP Auto RC Project- New Additions: Mike Schmidt

With most of my projects coming to end, I have been looking at different projects to get involved in, that would really take me back to the joy that I had when involved as a kid in collecting. I really wanted to get back to my roots, where the hobby wasnt so expensive, and I wasnt so obsessed with high grade cards. With that being said, when I was younger growing up in Tampa, I loved the thrill of chasing autographs with fellow board member and my good friend Bobby (Bporter26). We had some great ground to chase in with all four major sports within an hour or so of us. This coupled with the great threads of Mike(TheNavarro), Mike(VitoCo1972) and John(Jswieton), is all the inspiration I need to get back into the chase. As my first love is baseball, the majority of my additions will be baseball players, and most likely HOF RC's. I will as you will see below, look to add auto's from some of my favorite players growing up spanning all sports.
With that above as a backdrop, I make my first addition: Jim Abbott
I just returned from Palm Springs yesterday where we concluded a week long sales meeting. One of the tasks in preparing for the sales meeting was to locate the motivational speaker to speak to our global sales force of about 150 sales people. I had tried to hire fellow collector and best selling author of the Little Red Book of Selling series Jeffrey Gitomer, but he was extremely expensive and I couldnt get approval for such a fee. So plan B consisted of trying to locate someone with an interesting story that could relate their story into the theme of our sales meeting. We decided on Jim Abbott, and I am sure glad we did. I met up with Jim for breakfast on Wednesday morning, and immediately knew we made a wise decision. Jim was extremely down to earth, sharing stories from his career, and talking about the game as a whole. I found it interesting when I asked him who his toughest out was, he immediately replied without even thinking about it. "George Brett".
Once Jim's talk began, he spoke to our team about an acronym that he carried with him throughout his career, ADAPT!
A= Adjustability
D= Determination
A= Accountability
P= Perseverance
T= Trust
Throughout the speach, Jim related each of these characteristics to stories throughout his career, that kept everyone on the edge of their seats wanting more. A couple stories in particular included Jim speaking of his time as a highschool quarterback in Flint Michigan, where he took his team one game from the state championships. He talked about how difficult it was to take the ball from center, and to hand off the ball to the running back with one hand. In one of the moments of humor, he mentioned how he ruined things for every quarterback to play at his old high school since he left, as he never caused a fumble in an exchange from himself to a RB, and and his coach to this day, continues to yell at the QB's today saying "How can you fumble, I once had a one-handed QB that never fumbled". Another moment that will reside with me for the rest of my life involved Jim speaking about Determination! He was continually questioned at each level if he would be able to field his position. In one instance in college, the opposing team bunted on Jim with the first 6 players to come to bat. He said he not only fielded the position, but he threw out all 6 batters that began that game trying to bunt. Next he looked to the croud and called my name. He asked me to come up and play catch with him, so he could demonstrate how he fielded the ball and transfered his glove, to prepare to throw. We exchanged 2 or 3 throws, and then he presented me with a ball that he had signed in advance for me. One of the coolest moments of my life. I wish I knew how to load the video that was taken onto these boards, and I would. After his speach had concluded, Jim took some pictures and signed some autographs, before departing. It is my privelage for Jim Abbott to be my first addition to my TTM and IP Auto RC project.

And welcome to the auto'd RC club LOL I will PM you about a specific signing coming up that you will want to get in on.
Thanks for sharing!
You got some good cards signed. They are rookie cards. I thought maybe you would choose the 1988 USA card.
How will you store the cards? 9 pocket pages full of the RC autos? PSA encapsulation?

PSA encapsulation. Some might just be stored in CS1 and in a box.
I guess its a nice collecting theme: In Person Autographed Rookie Cards (a photo to also substantiate this). There are a few select players I like to meet and have them autograph their rookie card for me. They are not necessarily HOFers either.
Thank you again, for sharing.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Good luck with your auto project, you have a great start...

Last week I mailed off two Dwight Gooden cards to get signed at a private signing to get our project rolling. I was a little disappointed when I opened the package yesterday and found that the 84 Topps Traded was smudged. Anyway here are the two cards Matt and I have added to our new TTM / IP project. My focus will be a little different from Matt. I'll focus on players I grew up with as well as HOFer of all sports, plus players from the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. (big surprise)

<< <i>Very nice Matt ... main thing is you want them to get slabbed! It's a killer when they come back NG and you KNOW they are good! >>
Normally a 2nd attempt at subbing will fix the problem...
I decided that Gaylord Perry would be the first TTM that I attempted. I figured with the visit we had while sharing a plane to Chicago, he would be my first attempt, as I wanted to send a letter to him regardless, thanking him for his time, and letting him know how I appreciated his willingness to talk baseball for 2 hours. Perry lives about 2 hours from where I do. I sent this off on a Thursday and got it back on Saturday.
