How much is centering worth? 1953 Mantle example

Three 1953 Mantle PSA 7s all showed up on ebay recently, I don't count 707 since the cards aren't priced to actually sell. Two sold for $3500 and $3700, but one at $3295 hasn't sold once and is up again. IMO, the PWCC has the best centering, the DSL second, and the Vaz last.

The question is the $3295 a fair price even with the lesser centering? Just for the record, I'm not looking to buy the card, I'm trying to figure out how much centering is worth as a % of the cards value.

DSL PSA 7 $3700

PWCC PSA 7 $3500

Vaz PSA 7 Unsold at $3295

  • The T/B centering on the DSL card is pretty bad, and that was the most expensive of the three.
  • I like the PWCC one the best. I agree the DSL is too o/c t/b for me.

I like the PWCC one the best also. But this is my real favorite and it's mine. Best of luck with your search for the 53 Mantle. Has always seemed undervalued to me.

  • Jeff: your PSA 6 looks better than any of the 3 - PSA7's . I would send it back for a review to see if it would bump to a PSA 6.5.

I really think 2 of the 3 PSA 7's should reside in PSA 6 or PSA 6.5 holders.

But if I had to pick one of the PSA 7's it would be (drum roll) PWCC. jmho

It does seem the 53 Mantle is undervalued. $3500 for a nice 7 ain't bad.

I agree that the 1953 Mantle is relatively undervalued especially when you consider there is no 1954 or 1955 Topps Mantle. Plus the design is one of the best ever for a baseball card.

$3295 for an marginally centered PSA 7 seems high. Does anyone know how this compares to VCP?

The Vaz one has a really rough looking lower-left corner. That could be turning folks off right there.

The more I look at it, the Vaz card should be a PSA 6. The other 2 cards are much better, with the PWCC the best one. $3500 seems like a good price.

Apparantly 707 thinks so looking at his price.

Jeff - That is a sharp PSA 6. Do you why it got a 6? It looks just as good as the other 7s.

    ndleo,

The only thing I can see as to why it got a 6 is slight corner touches. I think it should be minimum a 6.5 and if it was any other card other than Mantle it would be a 7.

Not sure anyone ever answered your original question about how much centering is worth. I am one who insists on very nicely centered copies for star cards. I am a little less anal for commons but really like the high dollar ones to be centered. I routinely will pay 10% to 25% more than the going price for a centered example.
