Love the packs! I do stuff like this all the time too, but the total combined value of every card in the 1988 Topps pack couldn't possibly equal 1/4 of the grading fees. But hey, sets must be finished!

I may be the only person ever to sub 1986,1987,1988,1989 Topps packs... the crappy thing is I may have to sub more if I ever want to pull some 10's!

Some Observations about how Topps label changed over time.
1. What they call the product they are selling
1970-1973- No mention of cards just the words baseball, gum and inserts are somtimes mentioned. 1974-1976- The cards are refered to as "Trading Cards" 1977-1987- The cards are refered to as "Picture Cards" 1988 -????- The cards are refered to as "Bubblegum Cards"
2. Years with clean labels, ie. no advertisements or blurbs. 1972-1973, 1975, 1977-1979, 1982 Total years= 7
3. The use of the lower right hand corner blurb for promotions or insert information. 1970-1971, 1980-1981, 1983-1989 Total years= 11
4. The start of the use of the term "The Real One" on their label 1981-???? hmmmmmmmmmm I wonder why?
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
i really need to add some of those to my collection.
No '75 Mini?
oh, were those all subbed by yourself?
you should add the '90 and '91 to round off the "wax" era

I'll strongly disagree here. PSA has some great slabs- T3's, coins, salesman samples- but the pack slab doesn't come anywhere close to those. The pack is a small % of the entire display, and as we've seen on these boards does nothing to protect the pack- on the contrary, it may well be damaging them. Both for eye appeal and protection it ranks no better than a very distant #2.

They are big and bulky but I don't mind since I display them out around my man cave... But Giff is right they do damage packages - the gum can slide around very easy in PSA holders and tear through the sides of packs.
<< <i>Very nice!! Any idea what series the 1970 and 1971 packs are? >>
Not sure - I asked Steve over at the BBCE if he could tell and he said no - only sure way would be to bust open the pack. >>
for the 71 packs I'm pretty sure coins only came in 2nd, 3rd and 4th series packs, never seen a 5th series pack but the 5th series didnot include the coin checklist where the 2nd, 3rd and 4th did.

I don't recall any of the details. but I think in 1970 you can identify at least a couple of the series based on the back ad.
