Why is Strasburg card #661 in the Topps Update Set?

The complete base set has 660 cards. The Update Strasburg is #661. Anybody know why? Is it a variation with Strasburg having a regular numbered card too? Help, I'm confused. Not a big deal, but I figured somebody could let me know what is going on.

Is there not a 661 Gibson SP as well ? I thought maybe the Strasburg card got issued separately and was packaged in some latter base factory sets, in update packs and maybe as a redemption card as well. But, not sure

I have both at home. I think the picture is a different one in the update set than the one that came in the factory sets. I'll double check when I get home tonight

I know the topps giveaway card 661A is almost the same pose, honestly it looks like a few frames different in his wind up from his first pitch

The factory set came with 661 cards with #661 being the Strasburg. I was refering to the #661 in the update set being a different photo (I think but not positive till I get home and look) from the factory set #661.

The MCG card is definitely a different picture.

The one on the left is the Topps Update series #661 and the right is from the factory set (also #661)

    the backs are identical

I was not asking the original question because of Strasburg. I was asking because I am a set collector and I was trying to understand what was going on.

So, are you telling me that there are now 661 cards in the base set (instead of 660) and 331 cards in the Update set (instead of 330) and that both Strasburg cards are numbered #661? That was sheeeeer genius! (not really)

Is there then not a Strasburg that has a regular number in the Update set? (ie USxx)

Hi Shane, this is a prime example why I stopped collecting sets. Just when you think you have it done, they pull you back in with another gimmick......and they wonder why card collecting isn't like it used to be.....

He has a MLB debut card in the update series too along with all the other rookies that made their debut this year.

Amen.. It all seems like such an obvious scheme to sell tons of junk for the blossoming number of chase cards.

They've been adding retired veteran SPs into their base sets for a couple of years now. It's just one of those. Usually 10 to 15 different ones in each series.

When ripping, they usually fall about 1 per box.

These are all the variations of card 661 and how they were released:

    2010 Topps
661a Stephen Strasburg MCG (RC logo lower right)
    661b Stephen Strasburg Auto MCG
661c Stephen Strasburg (RC logo along left border, arm back) Issued in Update
661d Stephen Strasburg (RC logo along left border, arm forward) Issued in Factory Set
661e Stephen Strasburg (Road Uniform) Issued in Update
661f Stephen Strasburg Pie Face Issued in Update
661g Bob Gibson Issued in Update

    Hope this helps.

On a side note I am looking for these if anyone wants to trade or sell.

OK, I've figured out the reason for the multiple Strasburgs. When you put them all in your spokes and watchthem rotate, you can see his windup/delivery in motion.image
