  • Yes, I know the boss, Michael Chou, and regularly talk with him. Prices for Chinese coins are getting ridiculous. Prices for some coins are up 400 - 500% since 2008. Check the Ponterio sale held the day after the Champion sale. Crazy prices there too.
  • As hot as Pandas are they still have a lot of ground to cover to catch up to Chinese Lunar coins. I think the Lunar coins are showing us what happens when Chinese demand meets finite supply. Example: 2010 1 oz. silver Year of the Tiger colored coin, authorized mintage 100,000, market price (drumroll, please) $725.00. Or, 2009 1 oz. silver Year of the Ox flower-shaped coin, mintage 60,000: market price: $760. Are these prices real? Try to buy one from CE Collection/PandaUSA.com or PandaAmerica; they are essentially sold out of all pre-2011 Chinese Lunar coins and the 2011 coins haven't even arrived in North America yet. This could easily be where Pandas are going as many coins have populations under 3 or 4 thousand.

P.S. The prices quoted are from the Panda Pricepedia list.

  • Hi Peter

I am going to try to buy your book off Amazon.

How are Platinum 1oz Platinum Pandas doing? NGC 69?
  • They were strong in Hong Kong; three of the four coin years + the NY medal sold above estimate. If you're interested, when you buy the book on pandacollector.com it includes the curent issue of Panda Pricepedia, a price list/newsletter that covers essentially all Panda and Lunar coin prices and is updated monthly. These are good times to own Chinese coins.

Will do for sure! You will sign it for me right?

If its a good time to own Chinese coins, then does it also mean its a good time to sell them OR should one hang on for a little longer?
  • It'll be my pleasure to sign a book for you. As for the question, is this a good time to sell Chinese coins? First, I'm a collector of and writer about Chinese coins, and someone who buys and sells a few, but I don't pretend to be an investment adviser. So my thoughts on the economics of collecting are strictly those of an amateur. That said, I think there is a likelihood that the values of Chinese coins will continue to grow with the Chinese economy and may well outperform it.

Vast amounts of purchasing power is in the hands of China's people. There are hundreds of thousands of millionaires there today and that number is growing. Numismatics is gaining popularity and that is why the prices of Chinese coins are climbing so quickly. The number of Pandas, Lunars and other coins that exist to fill this demand is tiny. If you took all the silver Pandas ever minted they would add up to less than one year's production of silver Eagles. As you will see in the book there are gold and platinum dates and varieties with populations well under 1,000. There are silver Pandas and Lunars under 10,000. These will be discovered one-by-one by collectors and their ultimate prices are beyond my own ability to guess. For example, one coin that the book pulled the curtain back on has gone from $150 to more than $5,000 in three years.

Anyway, I could go on and on. The one thing that is sure is that many people are sitting on big profits from these coins already. If you sell your coins you can lock in a sure gain and there's no harm in that. It's my view, though, that we witnessing the infancy of this market and anyone who buys wisely and rides it may end up very happy that they did.

These are good times to be selling Chinese coins, not necessarily owning them.
