Sacagawea Variaties ? LDS Cheerios Obverse Die w/Pics

Haven't posted in quite a while. Hope all has been going well for everyone.

I came across a Sac dollar that looked different than any other I've seen. First off, the coin is extremely well struck. The surface is not like the typical Sac dollar either. It is not as grainy as you normally see. You can also see flow lines towards the rims. Maybe the surface appearance is just a result of the above average strike.

Of course I checked the tail feathers hoping it might be the sought after "Cheerios" dollar, but found the normal reverse. Flipping back to the front, I noticed die polish just below and left of the mint mark. Upon closer inspection, I can see what looks like the "cheerios" identifier hidden under the polish. It appears that the die polish was done in an attempt to remove the die polish/gouge as seen on the "Cheerios" coins.

Is there a known variety with this attribute?

Are Sac's hard to photo or something...man, I don't remember ever having such a hard time taking a couple coin pics. So, sorry about the lighting difference. With that being said, the lighting does highlight the die polish area under the mintmark. The pics also show the flow lines behind Sacagawea's head in the left field as well as the flow lines around the eagle's upper wing and above AMERICA near the rim.

Here is a "Cheerios" Sac. You can see the the little die polish curve under the mm. Where these dies known to have been used after minting the "Cheerios" dollars?

I am no expert on Cheerios or Sacs but I think that there is more than one Cheerios
variety. The extra detail reverse and a normal as I recall.

I should also mention that the rims have a more squared off look, not as rounded as typical.

If you can send me pictures, I should be able to tell you if the obverse die has the same markers as the pattern dollar.

  • How exactly did you come across the coin? Did you pick it from circulation or buy it from a coin shop, etc.?

What year and mint mark is the coin? I'm guessing it must be a 2000 if you suspect a Cheerios variety.

Attributes sound similar to a VIP Sacagawea or maybe a Goodacre Presentation Piece. Doubt very seriously as the Goodacre's were all initially slabbed by ICG and removing the coin from the slab without re-slabbing makes no sense.

Could possibly be as you stated a Cheerios non pattern coin somebody got out of the cereal box and spent.

Very curious as to where you picked it up and a photo would be great.

I'll try to get some pics up later this evening.

    It is a 2000 P

The coin was in a small group of coins that I bought from a friend. It came in a "official presentation folder" purchased from US Commemorative Fine Art Gallery per the receipt that was in the folder. It was purchased on 8/21/2000. The coin is uncirculated, and if I were to guess without knowing the series very well, I'd give it a MS67, maybe MS68 grade.

I couldn't find a pic of the VIP dollar to compare.

Are there other markers on the "Cheerios" obverse besides the die polish extended from under the coat, below the mint mark?

Does not look like the same obverse die as on the pattern dollars to me. Will get them out of the SDB and compare when I can.

Are there other identifiers on the pattern coins besides the die polish/gouge below the MM?

Added a pic of the "Cheerios" pattern dollar. Still trying to figure out if my coin is a LDS of the obverse die.

Curious as to thoughts on the grade as well....
