2008 Foil Boxes

Hi everyone,

I am new here and just started getting back into collecting cards after collecting as a kid/teen in the 80s and early 90s. I am currently putting together a raw 1960 Topps set, but that is beside the point.

My son was born in 2008 and I wanted to get a couple of boxes of cards from 2008 to save for him to open up once he gets older, but I can't decipher all the differences between the different Topps and Upper Deck brands. When I stopped collecting there was Stadium Club, Leaf and Ultra. Between Topps Finest, Stadium Club, Chrome, Sterling and Upper Deck Sp Authentic, Spectrum, etc. I can't figure out what would be something fun to open, but that may still have some value.

Any input would help. Thanks.

    Hi Joel

I hope you and your son are doing well. I have three boys myself and can't wait until they can appreciate the hobby. There were many many products
made in 2008. There were still 3 card companies making stuff so there is plenty to choose from. I think you can break down most of the boxes into
    a few groups:

RC products....heavy in rookies and prospects, many of these guys are just now hitting the majors. Of course in 10 years or so you and your son might be
scratching your head wondering who many of these guys are, you will of course get a chance to pull that big RC. Products that fit under this catagory
include Bowman, Bowman Chrome, Bowman Chrome Draft, Elite Edition, Bowman Sterling, Threads, Contenders, and Topps Chrome.

Retro products...these are nice products that pay homage to the older products. Nice set builder sets also. This group includes Allen & Ginter, Heritage and Goudey.

High End products...these are boxes or sometimes packs that have high dollar cards in them, originally selling for 100+ a pack or 300+ a box, most of them
have over time came down in price. Some of them are really hit or miss too. Includes Prime Cuts,Co-Signers,Topps Sterling, Triple Threads, Ultimate and Premier.

Personally base topps is a great way to start, they have series 1 and series 2 and these should be VERY cheap. Heritage and A&G are also very nice. 08 Ginter
is these cheapest year out of all of them and heritage should be dirt cheap also. IF you are into the prospects at all you can't go wrong with elite or draft. I will
mention one VERY IMPORTANT thing. Make sure there aren't a whole lot of redemptions in whatever you choose, chances are when you boy gets old and opens
it these will be expired. Most companies, especially Upper Deck insert redemptions insead of the high end hits....guys like Jeter and Pujols. Knowledge is power.

Good Luck to you and your son!

Great information. There are still a ton of choices, but this helps immensely.

Thanks for the link to BBCE as well. Has anyone bought from Dave and Adam's Card World? I am looking and they have a little more selection and some items are cheaper there.

D&A is also good and has a much larger selection of modern stuff. 2008 boxes won't be hard to come by in the future. If I were you wait until the time comes and make an event of seeking out a 2008 box together (even if it is online), it may add to the experience. Also 2008 boxes will just get cheaper as more recent stuff continues to come out, save yourself a few bucks and buy when the kid is ready to open.

    My 3 boys were born 2004,2005,and 2009.

I did something similar for them

For each of them I bought from their birth year...

    US Mint Coins
1 - Silver Proof US Coin set
1 - P&D Rolls of Kennedy Half Dollars
1 - American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

    Baseball Cards
1 - Box of Bowman Chrome
1 - Box of Bowman Heritage
1 - Topps Factory Set Holiday Version
    1 - Box of Topps series 1
    1 - Box of Topps series 2
1 - Box of Topps Heritage
1 - Box of UD Goudey

    Stamps
1 - Book of the current postage
1 - Book of current commemorative series

  • I like this idea a lot. He has the mint set and I might copy the rest. Thanks!

  • Keep in mind that by the time your son is ready to discover this wonderful cardboard fever we all have, Upper Deck will most likely be a distant memory.

Stick with Topps. Goin' strong since '52

Of the modern cards that are out today. My favorite is Topps Heritage. They really are nice cards imo.

    I like the 2008 design...

For yourself. I personally would snag up a box of 2004 Topps Heritage. 2004 Topps Heritage is hands down my favorite modern set that is out there. Thats just me though...
