Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Always listened to Ronnie on radio at work. Not much broadcasting skills, but fun to listen to - I can't imagine what my work day will be like now that I will not hear Ronnie's voice during the Cubs game. He will be missed!
I collect Seattle Pilots autographs, 1969 Topps autographs, Signed Mickey Mantle Home Run History cards and have a JC Martin collection (he was my college Baseball coach) Doug
I think Ernie Banks and Ron Santo should have shared the name Mr. Cub. Very sad day for Cubs fans.
From what I can tell, 707 is the DOLLAR STORE compared to deans_cards. For what that guy charges, if I ever bought anything from him I would expect it to be delivered to me in a frickin' limo. ~WalterSobchak
We're running out of players like Ron who's name becomes synonymous with their team. Chicago was blessed to have him. I never could understand how a team with Santo, Banks and Williams didn't win the pennant.
the real crime is that lesser players like Brooks Robinson are in but Santo isn't despite towering over him in win shares - (Santo -59th all time at 132.8, Robinson isn't even in the top 100) or his 125 OPS+ compared to Robinson's 102 OPS+...or most importantly, his old bitter codger peers on the Veteran's Committee shunning him because he was a ra-ra type fiery player who would hotdog it at times.
Cubs vs Brewers
Santo - this guy (Ruben) Quevedo, you know, we used to have a guy who looked just this guy. Same mechanics, same build, same stuff. Pat Hughes - Quevedo pitched here with the Cubs the last few years Ronnie Santo (an inning later) you know, I think this is the same guy who pitched for us. Pat Hughes - this just proves these broadcasts are indeed live.
RIP Ron. A truly all around great guy! I had a blast listening to Santo and he always said something during the game that made me laugh. Lane is that a custom Gartlan? Thats awesome!

Nothing against Santo, but I don't know if you could call Brooks the 'lesser player' of the two. 16 GGs to go with good offensive #s, an MVP, and a bunch of top 5 MVP years too. Would be an interesting decision if a GM had to pick one or the other - can't really go wrong either way. RIP.
I'd still like to see him get in the HOF. --- Sonny >>
Just a great player, and one of the classiest guys in the history of baseball- and I say that as someone who doesn't care about the Cubs, and has no personal relationship at all with diabetes. Every BBWAA mouthbreather who put guys like Rice and Dawson in the HOF and didn't vote for Santo should have their credentials revoked immediately.

Ask Derek Jeter or Palmiero what those GG's say about your defensive prowess.
Edit to add: The above post sounds a little more smart-ass than I intended. You're right; both were great players. But I think Santo gets the nod by a fair margin if you had to pick between the two.

Apparently you missed the part where I pointed out that Santo is #59 all-time in Win Shares (which is the best metric to evaluate past players & their eras), where Robinson isn't even in the top 100. Or that Santo's career OPS is over a hundred points higher. I put zero stock in "GGs" but I acknowledge that Robinson was a moderately better defender. But it's not like Santo was Brooks Conrad out there. Santo won 5 himself, and had a stronger arm and came in on the ball better than Robinson. In 9 fewer seasons Santo still outhomered Robinson by 80 and still kept pace in RBIs...16 fewer than Robinson in 2500 fewer ABs. Neither had any speed, but Santo stole more bags. What can you possibly say Robinson was better than Santo in? Range as in his patented backhand on the line?...maybe throwing accuracy, or that he was quieter on the field. I'm not trashing Robinson, I'm just saying if Robinson is in the HOF then Santo has to be in too. Robinson played on better teams and was a moderately better defender and that's pretty much it. Oh yeah, Santo also had that whole diabetes thing while playing 81 home day games.

It's a travesty that someone who was that great a player and that passionate about the game and especially the Cubs could not get the honor during his lifetime. The world was robbed of one heck of an acceptance speech. RIP Ron.

Way to go, Keith! I only wish you and people like you had spoken up when Ron was still with us.
Let's hope the Veterans Committee gets their heads out of you know where and corrects their mistake, even though Ron won't be there to enjoy it (would have been an awesome induction speech!).

Yep, Hardball Times has a couple of great articles about those Williams/Banks/Santo teams.

Trading Lou Brock to the Cardinals didn't help.
