What are your top 5 most desired AUTO Rookies?

After seeing that 1955 Clemente signed RC sell for over 6 G's, I figured somebody (hopefully someone here) was able to cross off one of their most coveted signed rookies. I was just wondering since there are a few AUTO RC card collectors here, what are some of their top cards yet to be x'd off their list they are still looking for.

1. 81 Topps Montana
2. 39 playball Ted Williams
3. 51 Bowman Mantle
4. 84 Star Jordan
5. 76 topps Payton

    Realistically?

    1955 Topps Koufax
    1954 Topps Aaron
    1968 Topps Ryan
    2001 Topps Pujols
    1993 Upper Deck Jeter
    and I have to add a 6th...
    1979 OPC Gretzky
  • Wouldnt true hardcore autograph collectors desire autos from players who died during or shortly after their rookie years?

Isn't that the name of the auto game???

These are the five that I'd like to get most for my personal collection right now.

1963 Topps Willie Stargell (tough to find a seller)

1949 Bowman Richie Ashburn (one was listed on ebay not too long ago with a decent buy it now and I didn't see it in time)

1955 Topps Roberto Clemente (I've seen a few of these sell, just haven't had the funds at the right time)

1952 Topps Eddie Mathews (I probably won't own this one, as the autograph is really common but the base card is priced reallyl high, so I don't see the need in paying $5,000 for a decent Eddie Mathews)

E102 Ty Cobb (have seen one, but it's not for sale, I think I have my alphabet right and it's an "E")

PS-My sigline has a few more of my most desired at the moment

  • here is my list:

    Jackie Robinson
    Mickey Mantle
    Sandy Koufax
    Roberto Clemente
    Willie Stargell
    Willie Mays

I'd have Aaron on my list but he's been doing a few signings so he should be getable soon.

These will probably my toughest to find or most expensive to purchase - I've been working on the MLB Hall of Fame Players - Post War Rookies Autographs - Once I get back a current sub I'll be over 50%

    79 OPC Gretzky
    57 Topps Bill Russell
    55 Topps Koufax
    51 Parkie Howe

How will you complete your 1969 Topps set without purchasing pre-signed autos? :-) I'm pretty much down to guys that either don't sign or can't sign.

Mike, were you the winner of the 55 Clemente that recently sold? I was pulling for someone here to get it.
  • 52 Mantle.

Nope, wasn't me, it was one of my friends from SCN though. I've invited him over here to start posting, but he doesn't care for slabbed cards. As a matter of fact, he is cracking out the Clemente just like he does all of his slabbed cards.

I wonder what his reason is for that. Tell him he can still post here even if they're not slabbed.

Here's a direct cut and past of how he answers that. I personally don't agree with him in on this subject, but to each their own. He's a good guy.

    Here's the cut and paste:

"I bust them out for several reasons. One, I personally think the PSA holders are flimsy and cheesy looking with the loud red/blue flips. I much prefer the Beckett/JSA slabs, as they are substantial and pleasant to look at. For reference on how flimsy the PSA slabs are, it takes me less than 10 seconds to fully bust one out. With that said, I do keep the slip and a photograph of the slabbed card in case an issue ever arises and I need to get the card reauthenticated. I keep all my cards in matching holders and in a custom-made wood storage box. At some point I may break down and get them all slabbed, but it will be through JSA. I realize busting them out is not a good idea from an investment standpoint, but I have no plans to sell any of my cards and in my opinion, the aesthetics is worth more than the security of a slab."

I'm just getting into signed AUTO rookies as I have completed just about all my projects and admiring Mike (VitoCo and TheNavarro) and John (Jsweiton)'s thread for far to long. So this will be my focus now going forward. These might not be overly difficult but would mean the most to me.

    1. 80-81 ToppsBird/Magic/Dr J
    2. 58 Topps Jim Brown
    3. 48 Bowman Stan Musial
    4. 81 Topps Joe Montana
    5. 68 Topps Nolan Ryan
  • JSA/BGS slabs are possibly the ugliest cases around. Combination of an ugly label and a cloudy case. BGS does make a secure case, and I buy a lot of slabbed BGS cards, maybe 1000 in stock?...but I can't imagine how anyone can think they are not ugly. The cases are way too bulky ( I should show scans of a set I am working on....about 350 BGS slabs in...and it takes up a whole dresser) and they are not clear, but a tinted a little...almost milky. Compare a BGS slabbed card with a PSA slabbedcard side by side and there is an obvious tint to the BGS.

They do well in slabbing (graded) auto and GU cards....outside of that....image

Hey Mike, I was browsing eBay this morning and I noticed a guy does have a 1952 tools Eddie Mathews for sale. Just wanted to give you heads up in case you wanted to negotiate with him on a price. Take care.

I plan to own a '55 Clemente one day, but only after I've paid off all debt (my house and student loans). I really like saving money and paying off debt.
