great southern coins ?
As I'm sure everyone here knows, these guys have some great looking coins on ebay and get alot of bids on higher grade raw coins. Solid feedback, good return policy.
It's contrary to my normal practice, buying raw coins over say $100 on ebay....but
Has anybody here bought an "expensive" raw coin from them ? How'd it go ?

<< <i>highly deceiving pictures imo >>
Yep. Do a search for them on here...they're known for their deceiving pictures and possible use of shills.

When you image your coins for sale, don't you want them to look as good as you can without changing the picture?
They provide very little description on purpose as they stand behind every claim they make about the coin.
All the coins I purchased looked like the pictures with the same small ticks on the coins I got.
Case in point;
They accepted my return even after sending into to PCGS for grading three months later.
The coin I purchased as a upper MS coin graded AU.
This was one of many coins I purchased from them. That said, I take them with a grain of salt. I now buy only Southern Coins under $100.
Several graded out as I expected. None graded better than expected.
As far a using shills, Although the quantity of bids make them appear that way, this is unproven supposition, which is not fair.
Not supporting Southern, but they are Great at marketing coins and making a viable business out of it that has quite a large following!
Just providing another POV.
<< <i>As far a using shills, Although the quantity of bids make them appear that way, this is unproven supposition, which is not fair. >>
Perhaps take a look at this thread about their shills.
I did, however, send an e-mail in regards to a coin they had for sale
that I suspected might have been cleaned. I never got a response, so I
will never buy from them.
I think they are using the buyers greed factor as a marketing tool. It is so enticing to think you'll get something cheap. Take away your desire to get something for nothing (or cheaper than normal) and you wouldn't bid there.
<< <i>You have to ask yourself, why are these expensive "raw" coins not in a slab? >>
Precisely.
And very large majority of their so called Uncirculated coins are in actuality cleaned AU at best. Most of the rest have problems. They are very good at disguising this in their photos. I would (and do) avoid this seller unless I can cherrypick him for a variety.
I have not bought any raw coins but the slabed coins I have bought where so much
nicer when I got them and I was very pleased. I bid what I want to pay and nothing
more so if I get shilled no problem it will cost them notme.
Far as I am concerned I will continue to bid on their coins but not raw ones.
There is another dealer that sells a ton of raw high price coins and once I bought two
and there was no problem in sending them back. Yea sure ya got to pay the return
postage but you might get a good deal but I leave that up to the gamblers, I'm a poker player.
I see there stuff daily and never bid on anything they offer.
I submitted it to pcgs and it graded AU55.
So, my experience with them is satisfactory.

They put about 30 IHC on ebay about 7 or 8 years ago. All were RED! I placed starter bids on all of them and had each one in a separate window as they were closing
about 2 or 3 minutes apart. I won't say their grades were all accurate but they WERE red. I was all ready to do battle for them but didn't have to.
NOBODY was bidding against me. I won them all for my starter bids (their opening bids) even though I had placed higher bids on them.
The same thing happened a week later for the rest of the dates with the same results. I think this was during vacation time.
I now have a set of full red IHC collection for about a tenth of PCGS prices!! You just can't beat that. Fortunately, there was no reserve on any of them.
I still think this was the greatest thing since fried mushrooms.
I don't know if that says anything good or bad about GSC but they made my year.

I collect all 20th century series except gold including those series that ended there.
I have bought one pcgs slabbed coin from them and was very pleased with the transaction....and I would be willing to do this over and over again.
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

My original thought was been repeated here...if these coins are so spectacular, then why aren't they in slabs already....?
Sorry to reopen old wounds, maybe I'll try out the search feature next time.

There's a reason their coins have a "uniform" look. They apply the same "hide the flaws" glare technique to every coin. Why do you think their surfaces all have the same look? Now if you look at the coins from a reputable seller they all look different.
<< <i>When you image your coins for sale, don't you want them to look as good as you can without changing the picture? >>
Yes! But they do "change the picture". They intentionally hide flaws. And the only reason they have a good Return Policy is not because they're an honest caring seller, but it is to prevent the inevitable negative feedback. That is how even unscrupulous sellers retain a good feedback rating.
jayPem I'm glad you got the true picture of this seller before you spent your money.
Think about it.
Unless a company like SC (who has both detractors and advocates) violates the US or EB law,
you have the ability to buy or not buy from them.
Many EB consumers purchase their coins from SC everyday and are satisfied.
Many CU members have negative experiences and some positive.
Although I have not seen examples like the clever Oranges pictures from SC, I will now will watch them closer as a result of this forum.
Thanks to all for sharing.
I went to some of their other autions and saw that every one of their raw coins had the same overall look.
I reasoned that the odds of that happening were close to 0.
I passed...
Let your protection from eBay give assurance enough that if the coin doesn't meet your criteria, you can be made whole. Each to their own. I'd do a lot better if I just sent Great Southern Coins my stuff to sell, and they would, too.
The buyer bears some responsibility. Caveat Emptor. I'll just leave it at that.
