how do crack open bgs slabs?

I want cross over a 1998 foil tiger woods masters card but there is no seem on the slab to wedge the screwdriver into. BGS has the best slabs by far imo. Most of my collection is in psa slabs but if i ever got a big money card that i wanted to store for a long period of time i would pick bgs.
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here

I have had no problem busting those or any slabs for that matter by using 2 large channel locks. I just get a good grip across the bottom of the label about and inch from the top and then use the other on the top and just snap the top corner - then it's easy the rest of the way.

  • Use needle pliers to crimp off each corner then, take a small tip flat head screwdriver and run it across the top of the holder where the opening appears at either top corner. You will feel the case start to separate, carefully run the screwdriver from the to the sides until the case separates. The card will be enclosed in a protective sleeve. I would recommend a box cutter versus scissors in opening the sleeve.

I do the same thing with a pair of channel locks, lineman pliers or large needle nose pliers. A bandsaw works great also. I happen to have one, so it's convenient. After I crack or cut off the top of the slab, I pry apart the edges with a flat screwdriver.

I lay the slab down on a firm surface, get a flathead in between the tiny seam where the two halves of the case were sonically sealed- up hear the flip. Tap the screwdriver with a hammer and wedge it in there. It's safer for you, and for the card, than using pliers or anything on the corners.

And wear glasses!! BGS slab shards fly with great velociti. Cracking out a card is not worth losing an eye.

first thing I do is to lay the slab flat, put a philips head screwdriver near the top where the flip is, then smack the screwdriver good with a hammer. Yes, pieces will go flying so be careful. Then I just use a flathead to pry the rest of it apart.
