My Chicago Sun Times Show w/ some bumpage!

Thought I would share some highlights from the last couple days in Chicago at the Sun Times Show. I left Charlotte for Chicago on Friday just before noon, and was fortunate enough to have HOF pitcher Gaylord Perry sit next to me. I really had a great time talking baseball and life in general with Mr. Perry. He couldnt have been nicer and when we deplaned, he reached into his pocket and gave me a baseball card and asked me to be sure to stop by his booth during his signing time, and he would autograph it for me for free. I certainly took him up on the offer when they were announcing last calls for Mr. Perry auto's during the show, and got the card along with a baseball signed. Perry ended up having the room two doors down from me at the hotel, so it seemed like I bumped into Gaylord all weekend, as he stayed on Saturday and did some more autographs for Fergie Jenkins juvenile diabetes foundation.
As for the show itself, it seemed to be well attended, especially on Saturday when it was absolutely packed! There was a nice mix of vintage along with modern cards being represented. One booth that stood out to me, were a father and son tandem that had an insane amount of high grade Post War HOF rookies. They had just about every big name rookie and star cards from 48 to 79 in PSA 8 and PSA 9. It was really something to see, and as I later found out from fellow board member Russ (Onefasttalon), the only show that this father and son team attend. The bad news was they were at least 30% higher than VCP on every card they had, and it didnt appear as though they had sold a thing, based on there asking prices. None the less, quite the assembly of Post War high grade star and rookie cards.
As for my pickups, I was only able to make a couple purchases, but I think I made them count. I picked up a 62 Topps Stamp Musial (actually negotiated the deal off EBAY prior to the show, but the dealer and I consumated the deal at the show) along with a dead centered spectacular 57 Clemente PSA 8.

With PSA being at the show, I couldnt pass up the opportunity to bring a couple cards along that I felt deserved to be looked at (REVIEWED). I really had one goal in mind, and that was of course to get PSA to take another look at my Clemente RC. I sought out Joe on Saturday morning and after exchanging pleasantries and talking a little about Stan Musial, I asked him if he would be so kind to have the graders take another look at my Clemente RC. He was very accomodating, and took my card, and asked me to seek him out towards the end of the show on Saturday. So after spending the day walking the show, grabbing some lunch, and walking the show another dozen times, it was 4:30 PM and I set out back toward the PSA booth. I caught Joe's attention, and he came out and we visited again, before he indicated he would go in the back and check on my card. Upon his return, he commented that he was sorry and handed me back my Clemente.
Freshly Cased and BUMPED to a 7.5.

This of course was the highlight of my show, and in my opinion is the proper grade for this card. I am glad that PSA agreed and finally put the card in the proper holder. I can't say enough though about how accomodating Joe Orlando was not only this weekend, but also at the National this previous year, as he never once asked for payment, for either review.
Finally, as I returned home today, I decided to stop by the Post Office and check my box. Inside was a card I have been waiting on, and I couldnt be happier, as this beauty was inside.

This card is insanely nice! Aside from a little tiny red spot on the upper left border, this card is as MINT as any card can get. Centering is perfect, corners are sharp, and surface is clean. I guess I found my next candidate to be bumped.
Anyway, despite doing this trip by myself, I had a great time! I ran into some board members (Onefasttalon, SVTPony and Gumbyfan), and of course ate well. Not a bad way to spend the weekend.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.

Awesome!! After seeing this card in hand, it was a no-brainer to me...so I'm happy PSA saw it the same way! It feels awkward to offer congratulations, but I could only imagine what a relief it is to get the bump you deserve.
It was great meeting you on Friday and chatting for a while. The highlight of my weekend was meeting a few of the best folks from the boards. Next time, I'll make better plans and will have to make it over to dinner.

Its great stories like this that keep this board interesting and the hobby fun. Sounds like a great experience with a HOFer!

I bought a bunch of stuff and left it with PSA. Now it is time for PSA to grade my haul. It will be like having another show when the cards start to pop.

When I collected, I concentrated on 1962. I really like the 1962 stamps. I completed a set of these about 15 years ago. I got all 245 panels, the stampbook and the box the books came. They are all centered. Although I have not sent them in for grading. About 8 years ago or so, I did get the box that the stamp books came in graded, GAI graded it 7.5. GAI use to grade them at the show, do they still grade at the show. They also graded my 1962 1 cent box and 2 1962 5 cent boxes.
I am looking to get back into collecting cards.

<< <i>Bummed that Seaver no-showed today. I was hoping to get his autograph. Otherwise, had a fun weekend at the show digging through clearance boxes. >>
A number of players canceled out which was unfortunate but it was still a fun show. I know a friend of mine had to get refunds for Sutton and Mazeroski and I heard McClain didn't show as well.
I know what dealers you are talking about. Its a father/son thing (me and my dad both collect as well) and they are really collectors IMO as their prices are very pre 2001'ish. They are from Indiana but never set up locally. I also had them quote a price and when I pulled out the money to pay another person came over and said wrong price (it was like a 200$ difference and put the card about 175$ over VCP) so that bummed me out as I spent alot of time talking about the card and price with the 1st guy,. if I knew what the "real" price was I woulda passed and been on to the next table.
If you still have your 61 Musial let me know my dad is looking for one.

None of my ranting has anything to do Matt. He's a great guy and that is a wonderful card. Congrats
What was Joe's explanation this time around (as to why it wasn't a 7.5 last time but now it is a 7.5)? Just curious.

Dan, Honestly I didnt ask Joe for an explanation. I was happy that at least in my mind they got the grade right after further review. I have really nothing negative to say about the process. Its a key card, so I am sure they tread lightly when assigning grades. Be that right or wrong, it is what it is.
Thanks to everyone for such nice comments, Its nice to be able to share stories such as this, and it be well received.
congrats!!!

On the rookie....If that card was in an 8 holder and put on the bay..It would be the best 8 on there.
