1997 Playoff Chip Shots & 1st and 10 Chip Shots????

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between the two different types of chip shots?

  • Sounds like the same product. The Playoff chip shots came one in each 1st and 10 pack.

I think there are five different colors of each one.

Actually I found out some more info. The chips are different because of coloring and striping. I think the pictures are similar. I know I once sold a lot of what I thought was 1st & 10 to a buyer and he was MADDER than a hornet because they were ABSOLUTE. I found this info off a guy on Ebay, I hope he is right.

1997 PLAYOFF FIRST AND TEN NFL

    CHIP SHOTS INSERT

This 250-coin set. The first 200-chips were inserted in hobby packs and the final 50 were inserted in special retail packs.

The First and Ten chips were produced in three different colors: green, red, and yellow. The edges of the coins feature a striped pattern of one white stripe within two stripes of either red, green, or blue. These Green chips feature an edge color scheme of red/white/red stripes. Note that the coins are identical to the first 200-chips in the Absolute Chip Shots except for the color schemes. None of the color scheme patterns appear to be easier or tougher to pull from either product.

    1997 PLAYOFF ABSOLUTE NFL

    CHIP SHOTS INSERT

    This 200-coin set.

The Absolute chips were produced in three different colors: black, blue, and red. The edges of the coins feature a striped pattern of two silver stripes around a single stripe of either red or blue. Note that the coins are identical to the first 200-chips in the Playoff First and Ten Chip Shots except for the color schemes. None of the color scheme patterns appear to be easier or tougher to pull from either product.

This made me laugh, for whatever the reason.

  • From, eBay;

"1997 PLAYOFF Absolute Beginnings Hobby Box… Factory Sealed. Randomly inserted sets include: Leather Quads, Playoff Reflex, Chip Shots, Playoff Pennants, Autographed Playoff Pennants, Playoff Honors and Unsung Heroes. Includes 6 cards per pack and 24 packs per box."

So I guess the absolute's did have them also.

I don't think they have equal print runs. Jaderock had a theory or ideal on how they broke down, which appeared correct from my limited experience.

Also, I recall seeing a couple with no number variations or something like that.

  • Funny you should bring up the chip shots, rooting through boxes this weekend found a bag of 60+ chip shots from the 1st & 10.

if memory serves me right the chips from absolute were tougher because they were not 1 per pack like the 1st & 10 which were 1 per pack.

if your building a set of the 1st & 10, LMK the numbers, as these 60+ were my extras, have another bag of these somewhere as I was trying to build a set of these and just gave up after they released an extra 50 for retail only, was about 20 or 30 short of a set.

These would make great poker chips for the friday night poker game.LOL

what are the big rookies out of this set?
  • Tony Gonzalez is a RC the set. Corey Dillion, Warrick Dunn. Orlando Pace, are among some of the other RCs. At some point I will go after all the Gonzalez RC's.

I have the yellow and red Steve Young and could use any others.
