I get the free shipping thing, but this one I don't quite get

I just left feedback for a seller for some raw card purchases, and I was not allowed to leave a DSR for "shipping time". The explanation when you mouse over the "why can't I leave a rating?" question was something like "This EBay seller consistently meets our shipping standards".

Does this make any sense to you guys? How the hell do they know that the seller didn't royally mess up that aspect of this particular transaction, and not ship my cards for four weeks? Just because others have given him high DSR's for that category in the recent evaluation period makes him infallible now?
Giving immunity from being dinged for "reasonable S&H charges" when the seller offers free shipping makes perfect sense. You can't get more reasonable than free. But I'm not following the logic on this one at all. Any thoughts?

by the way, the transaction in question was awesome, seller (mavmil- highly recommended) shipped quickly, and he was getting 5's across the board from me regardless.

  • Maybe the shipping is very close to/at cost? I don't know that either- I thought you only did not get to leave it if the shipping was free.

Can I ask what was the shipping cost to you, and what did you pay?

Doesn't make sense to me either. They probably base it on something misleading like when they print shipping labels or somesuch. I bought one last night that already had a tracking number by 2am, but I really doubt it had shipped yet.

  • Sean,

The DSR that I wasn't allowed to rate for this transaction was shipping time, not shipping charge.

what doesn't make sense to me is how your seller can list what appears to be several hundred or even thousands of dollar cards for the privilege of selling a few.

eBay already didn't make sense to me, but HOW ON G'S GREEN EARTH does this guy stay in business? image

Don't know nearly enough about EBay stores/high volume EBay selling to answer that question, but I hope he makes it work well enough to stick around for a while. I have bought a total of 20-30 or so raw cards from him, and there hasn't been a single one that I felt he overgraded.

The transaction that blanked it out for me, did so because the seller created a shipping label by the "ship by" date. My logic behind this is that people are dinging sellers for things out of their control (ie, the seller might ship package in time, yet the good ol' USPS takes their sweet time, or misdirects the package). I can totally understand that, because why should the seller be held accountable for a 3rd party shipper?

If that's the trigger for this, then it at least makes some sense. I still don't see why that necessarily means the seller actually shipped the item quickly.... but the idea is not quite as goofy as what I was thinking when I first tried to compute what was going on!!

  • Seller shipped quickly just like ebay said; so what are you complaining about?

But seriously, ebay has thrown overall customer service out the window and is protecting its most profitable sellers. There have been plenty cases of blatant shilling that they ignore and free shipping means more ebay fees and paypal fees to collect. How dare you even consider leaving poor marks to one of their free shipping customers?

I don't think the OP was complaining....he just thought it was odd that he could not leave a DSR at all, even a good one.

If you offer free shipping the buyer cannot ding you in that area.
  • Ebay has a new policy re: DSR's and shipping time.

"For an automatic 5 star shipping time DSR on domestic transactions, simply specify a 1-day handling time and upload tracking by the end of the next business day after payment clears. If your package arrives within 4 business days of uploading tracking, you'll automatically get 5 stars for shipping time."

I am glad to see an automatic 5 stars for FREE Shipping. The seller's deserve it.

The shipping time is not solely in the seller's control, but if they print the label and email the tracking within a day of receiving payment, that is all we can ask for.

I understand that giving 4 stars on anything does not help a seller. As long as I get my item safely and it was as described, I give 5 stars for everything. A seller that describes items well and ships it out in good time should get all 5 stars (they will in turn get perks from ebay). We need to support the legit sellers and not be petty over stuff they can't control.

There was on item I bought recently which was very difficult to describe, even when using photos. I emailed him so he can give me more details about the condition. I did not like him charging for shipping, but I weighed how much I wanted to bid up to taking the shipping into account and decided what was the fair total for me. I won the auction knowing full well my limit and stuck to my guns. Although I hated to pay separately for shipping, he described the item well and I know exactly what I was willing to pay TOTAL. I felt he was a legit hard working seller, I just gave him all 5 stars for everything. Anything less would have hurt him on ebay and I don't think he deserved that fate.

  • Your darn tootin' the sellers deserve it. Free shipping is a scam for Ebay, you get your bogus 5 star reward, but you pay more in final value fees if your wrapping the shipping cost into the price.
