My Largest Submission ever - scans being added

The Local card shop picked up a HOARD of baseball and football cards from 1952-1963, with the majority being from 1957 topps baseball, 1960 topps baseball, 1955 Topps All American (complete set +) and 1957 topps football.

I picked off a number of cards that I am sending in for grading. Including some big hitters

1957 football Unitas, Starr and Hornung
1958 Jim Brown Rookie
1955 Topps AA Jim Thorpe
1960 Mantle and Mantle AS
1957 Clemente and Snider
1960 Topps Snider, Koufax Mays AS
1962 Post Jim Borwn
1961 Topps Jim Brown
1960 Topps Honrnung and Unitas
about 125 other cards from the 1957 topps football set, basically I am sending in about an 80% complete set.
Of course some old golf cards!

I am forgetting a bunch here as between two collector clubs specials and the current set registry special it will be in excess of 350 cards total. Not much for many of you here but this is a LOT for me. Some of the sharpest stuff I have seen in a while here locally. The gentelman that brought them in to the local shop had them in cigar boxes, the colors are bright and fresh and finding a card with corner damage or any creasing was the exception not the rule. The downside.....a few have some rubber band indendations, including one of the Mays cards I am sending in although it is very tough to discern, but the centering and color is so nice I am taking a shot. The shop owner worked me some great prices on some of the stuff as I am a long term customer, and I of course am sending in some stuff for him as well to get graded. I could have easily spent another $1000 on commons that should grade in the psa 7 range or possibly even higher, but I did plenty of damage.

Hoping for lots of high grades. I will report back in when I get these all back. Have not decided what I am going to do with many of these that I picked up. I think I will be working towards the 57 set as far as football, but I will have a bunch potentially for sale.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

How often do you sub? I'd be curious to see you list your grade expectations for each card here so when you get them back, you can determine how similar your judgment is to PSA's.

Me as well.....I am guessing they are beaters, because I believe the current grading special has a $100 limit, and some of those cards seem like they exceed that limit.....

I used to submit a lot more than I do now. I have a number of sets listed on the misc registries that are golf card sets, about 90% of the cards in my registries were submitted by me. The nice thing about collecting golf cards is the sets are small and there is not a lot of product to chase down.

If you want check some of my registy sets, they are all under the name, Dave Johnson, - a good one for starters would be something like the 1923 Copes Golf Strokes under MISC sports sets.

The big hitters on this latest submission just went the set registry special route. The commons etc are ones on the november collectors club specials #1 and #2 (mainly older golf cards - some fleeting hopes at upgrades for my 1930 Pattreiouex Celebrities in Sport set, etc.) The most I paid for any one individual card on this submission was the Jim Brown Rookie which set me back $250. I have a scan of that one and will try to get it on here later.

277 cards on the 1956-63 special. Yikes!

Like I mentioned I had a good purchase price on these relative to what I think they will grade at. I finished up the paperwork last night so they most all are boxed up and ready to go. I scanned a few in before hand so when I get back home later today I will try and post a few scans on here, which frankly I am quite bad at.

Thanks for the good luck wishes.

Sorry lots of scans, but a few have asked to see a sampling, this is some of the higher valued cards obviously and the majority of these were not on the collectors club special but regular service. Just a sampling to give a flavor, look forward to thoughts and comments about what you might think some of these will grade out at.

always looking for 1969 graded basketball
  • I'd be curious as to what % of book you paid... but clearly there are some nice cards here. The highlights(I'm a baseball guy) to me are the '60 Koufax, '60 Maris & '60 Drysdale but those are some VERY nice Fleer football cards. I like the '61 Jim Brown more than the '58. Thanks for the scans!!!

    That Koufax is unbelievable
  • Holy Moly!! Nice cards, congrats on the pick-ups! Keep the scans coming and be sure to update us when the grades pop.

Nor do they to me now...wow! And these were in a local card shop???? Holy smokes!

The guy who owns the shop is not normally dealing in much at all in terms of graded cards. He has had a successful business for years but it is mainly newer product and unopened material.

His pricing was using beckett guide, I got a discounted price (not putting in exact figures here to protect from others that maybe get different discounts from him) but I will say his starting prices were very fair given the condition of the cards and that with my discount it was an exceedingly good deal.

Of course I am not showing you the gobs of commons I am also sending in. and sorry for the large scans by the way.

I figured on most of the semi stars and stars if they grade out at psa 5 at worst I will break even on what I paid for them. image, I am hoping for some 7 and 8's with this group. I never try to set my hopes too high, so it is better to aim low and then be pleasantly suprised.

Any thoughts on grades anyone? Just curious what else everyone thinks on some of these beauties.

To me, the 1957 Clemente is the best of the lot. I honestly see that being an 8.5 or 9. That should help pay for all the other cards.

Beautiful cards ... but that '57 Clemente looks to have a bend on the top right corner and the bottom left corner looks a bit soft ... could be the scan. Is there any snow on that card or is it the same "stuff" that is in the background?

Those cards are real beauties ... Should net you some 7s and 8s and give you a real nice profit on your purchase. CONGRATS and keep us informed on the grades.
    STAY HEALTHY!

the cards look better in person, my scanner is getting old and like an idiot I should have cleaned it a bit before doing these scans, so most of what you see is fingerprints and the like...

I have a question and an important one. ----Are you using the correct Card Savers. If you use the tight ones you could ruin the cards. Some of your cards are in the Card Savers very crooked................Take your time because you have some really nice cards. Your scanner does not do some of the cards justice.
