'52 Mantle scam connected to lostfaith?

Thunderdan posted a '51 Bowman Mantle being sold by ebay seller lostfaith on 11/6 that was more than suspicious. When reading the item description I noticed at the time there was only 1

person that had given feedback. It was a ebay member sweetflirt_4722. Looking at '52 Mantle's tonight I noticed sweetflirt was selling a PSA 7 that was up to over $5,000. I'm not sure if this is

legit but some of the description has the familar sound of fraud. "My Grandfather died and passed it on to me". What do you guys think?

Font on the flip is bad. It's one of the "Craigslist Fakes".

Plus, the image of the back isn't even the same case. The "rounded red border" flip had the hologram on the back of the slab.

  • I forgot to add the seller's note today 11/15 in caps: FEEL FREE TO MESSAGE ME OFFERS TO END IT NOW. That's what you call.....Take the money and run. How can someone stop this person?

    Question & Answer Answered On

Q: Card is fake. The font on the PSA slab is the giveaway.. and why anyone would bid on such a well known card of significant value from someone with 2 feedback proves how stupid most of the general population is. I don't see your auction lasting much longer before it gets pulled by ebay. Nov-15-10
A: The card is far from fake sweetie thank you for taking your time to address your concerns
Q: Hello, I have been trying to get one of these mantles for a long time. what are you trying to get for this mantle? I also wanted to make sure it is deff the one you have in the picture correct? Nov-15-10
A: the one shown in the picture is the exact one I have no altering. Make me an offer. We will go from there
Q: Do you accept paypal? Nov-15-10
A: I do accept paypal do you have an offer

These answers in my opinion represent a longtime scammer who has done this already many times before...

...not that it was all that hard to figure out. LOL

What's the over/under on the ebay "poof"?

The card looks real. He/she obviously stoled the picture.

image them. i hope the perpetrators of all this nonsense die in separate, well-publicized car wrecks.

and this is my softer side.
  • I had to....

    Dear sweetflirt_4722,

All i have to say is that now the FBI is involved and between you and lostfaith, I would totally cease this auction or be prepared to be in handcuffs.

If you think I am kidding, go ahead with this sale... Please!

What do Mr. Schillito and Mr. Scammerada think?

Two hours to go and up to $7K. I actually went through the process of reporting them last night. To say the least it's not a very personable process, it allows only 100 characters (letters) to explain the reason you think it's fake. Not enough, and I'm not sure I got my point across.

I reported the 51 Mantle but ran into the same problem
The process used to report such a scam is not intuitive at all
You sort of have to guess the closest thing
I have no idea why there isn't a big box to click "REPORT A FAKE OR FRAUDULENT ITEM"
And the 100-character limit wasn't even enough to paste in the link to where the real card was actually sold, LOL
Despite my report (and likely others) it looks like the '51 Mantle auction was allowed to complete

In my opinion this seller is a skilled scammer. The sad thing is he may have one of his shill accounts buy the card, leave glowing feedback, and later list other bogus expensive cards or memorabilia...and then really come in for the kill, from buyers figuring that if he successfully completed a transaction for a 52 Mantle, then his other sales must be legit.

    They gave each other FB
Sweetflirt bought Lostfaith's XBox and Lostfaith bought Sweetflirt's Strasburg refractor
    or something like that
I can't imagine a real buyer would fall for this

yup, at least some folks are trained well enough to sniff these things out, they just don't work in a Silicon Valley glass tower.

perhaps, a TOLD-YA-SO option should be created with enough room for the link.
  • What would happen if a guy bid to win on this auction. And instead of paying for it, just start asking all the tough questions and eventually leave a negative feedback.

Could that get a guy in any real trouble over that?

eBay just sucks. I don't know why we have to police their site and do all the legwork for them. They must have the manpower to do it themselves. Now, put all the obvious fraud stuff aside for the moment, this line alone should have gotten the auction pulled:

FEEL FREE TO MESSAGE ME OFFERS TO END IT NOW

    That's very against eBay policy.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Looks like the sham auction has ended with a sham buyer. What a joke. BTW, I was the one who called him out in the QA section. What an even bigger moron for posting that for everyone to see.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
sheesh. the underbidder is about to receive a 2nd chance offer. Scooby and Shaggy could have figured this out.

If you're a powerseller, like myself, you will get a slap on the wrist.
  • Wow, this person ships fast! Lostfaith58 left feedback for a Triple Thread Strasburg card less than four hours after winning the auction.
  • itzagoneritzagoner Posts: 8,753 ✭✭
    well, of course.

    delivered by the Tooth Fairy.
  • You people do know that accusing someone of a crime will make this thread go POOF?
  • if ebay did stop items like this they would make no money...case closed

Not unless the seller of this scam Mantle sends a bunch of cards to get graded on a monthly basis
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
