Walter Payton Auto real or fake??? Seller Selling lots of fakes???

Can anyone tell me if this auto is real or not... PSA was "Unable to Render Opinion"

I need this card to help finish my Bears 1985 Topps auto'ed cards so I really want it if it's real (been looking for it for several years now)

ebay link

my gut says the card is fake... I have a few Payton sigs and this doesn't really match up.

I am by no means an expert but I do have many Payton signed items. It doesn't look good to me.

I don't think it's good either, the company has an OK rep and is probably a big PSA customer so that's probably why you got the "unable to render opinion". So it begs the question, why isn't it in a PSA holder???

I'd pass, but if you bought it I don't think you'd have any problem getting your money back if it didn't pass, but of couse you'd be out PSA fees.
  • Yeh, he does state in the auction

"we GUARANTEE the signature(s) will pass PSA/DNA or JSA Authentication! "

So worst comes to worst, you are out the psa fees but get a refund on the actual card.

    Edit*

    I'm no expert but
I looked at multiple autos, it is slightly different- but the biggest thing I noticed is his "4" in 34 is moreso a fluid motion going from the top left then up then down, and doesn't seem to be 2 marks like the one in question

Only no where does he state what the guarantee is.

But as it doesn't look good, I would not want it if was slabbed either.

Good question... just looking at the sellers other "stuff" he does not appear to use PSA or JSA even though he knows what they are... Seems like the seller is leaving money on the table - unless he knows these autos are fakes.

Seller also has a George Brett Rookie that I need for my signed rookie auto collection - that card also doesn't look right.

  • No way! I wouldn't buy that. I personally like the Phone Cards of Payton instead of taking a chance on that card. The Phone Cards are still a steal at usually under $100 , I bought 2 at $40 about 7 years ago and sold one for $85. I actually wish I held on to it. They should be a Couple Hundred Dollars seeing as people are paying over $300 for a cut from the Phone Cards. Between Upper Deck and Steiner they are becoming harder to find.

    nah
  • Just ran a QO on his Brett Rookie... I think I will be staying away from his auctions...

Your Request for Item "1975 Topps Signed GEORGE BRETT #228 Rookie Royals

You are bidding on a vintage 1975 Topps auto", eBay Lot No. "200541596675", opinion was rendered at "11/15/2010 12:54:42 PM" and the result was:

    Response: "Likely Not Genuine"

  • looking more at this guys stuff I'd say he's a big faker... some of the stuff is not even close. Suprised he has 9,000+ positive feedback- some of the auto busters on this board should look into this guy!
    image
  • The Brett is no question bad. I see a lot that are no question real also. Actually most that I see are authentic. But I just quickly skimmed through.
  • We GUARANTEE they will pass submission to PSA or JSA. The "quick opinion" service is not very accurate. Thanks, Adam

    Dear sportsinvestments,

And what if they don't pass jsa or psa? I've submitted a few for online check and almost all of them come back likely not genuine.

I am far from an expert but I actually like the Payton. However, I do see a lot of his auctions that are clearly bad.

For some reason the "P" in Payton does not look right to me...

Several of the HOF auto's that I have look nothing like his... I'm really shocked this guys has such great feedback.

  • Here is his response

We will not refund authentication fees BUT we will refund the entire auction cost including shipping. By the way, which ones are they calling "Not Likely Genuine"? Thanks, Adam

which ones were likely not genuine? lol

Nice policy by the seller (no risk on their end)... they probably sell the crap mixed in with the good and hope people don't sub the stuff to PSA or JSA.

I don't know if I'm a Payton expert, but am pretty close. I am familar with many of his styles from his rookie era on. I don't like this one and would stay away. It looks similar of the fakes Coach's corner has been selling. I am also wondering why many of his cards are not in PSA holder too. Maybe PSA has already rejected them and he's selling as is.

The Montana card looks too good as Joe never signs his whole name. That card too failed when I QO'ed it.
  • What has everyone QO so far?

I've done the Brett and Payton... the Brett was no and the Payton a can't tell.

    So far I've done

    1.Payton...?
    2. Seaver...good
    3. Brett....no good
    4. Montana...no good
    5. Musial...good
    6. Riggins....?
    7. Bo Jackson....good
    8. Duke Snyder...good
    9. Marino....no good
    10. Bob Gibson....good
  • His response (after telling him the few)

The ONE thing that is consistent with there "opinions" on what they called "Likely Not Genuine" are all the rookie era signatures(signed early in their careers & signatures not consistent with the norm). This is very typical.
    Thanks, Adam

Love the reply - I guess we should trust them they know more than PSA... now I know why he does not sub to PSA!

I personally would stay away from that JR as it doesn't really match up well with the 3 I have. Not saying it's no good...just that I would lay off.

The same seller now has a real bad Ryne Sandberg rookie up that's not even close. Plus has doubles of the same cards he just sold last week.

    1) Running redbirds
    2) All of those Fleer cards with multiple autos
    3) A Ripken card signed by all three...that looks like it was penned by the same cat

guy has listed bogus Ripken signatures in the past
Successful dealings with Wcsportscards94558, EagleEyeKid, SamsGirl214, Volver, DwayneDrain, Oaksey25, Griffins, Cardfan07, Etc.

the 1988 Donruss card "signed" by all 3 Ripkens they currently list is no good either
Successful dealings with Wcsportscards94558, EagleEyeKid, SamsGirl214, Volver, DwayneDrain, Oaksey25, Griffins, Cardfan07, Etc.
  • I wish ebay would stop allowing people to be ripped off... they should make sellers have their stuff looked at by a Major 3 party authenticator like PSA/DNA or JSA before they can sell.

  • cubfan89cubfan89 Posts: 632 ✭✭✭
The guy for some reason has 100 % feedback. Does he state everything he sells will pass PSA/DNA or it's refunded?

Some of his stuff has no chance at passing
  • he will refund but not the grading fees... this guys is signing cards himself and making lots of money - I have no clue how this guys still has 100%.

It actually looks like he has never had a neg. You would at least a few guys would have bought some stuff that was no good and failedpsa/DNA. Then they would have left negative feedback. Did you wind up buying his 85 Payton?

  • << <i>It actually looks like he has never had a neg. You would at least a few guys would have bought some stuff that was no good and failedpsa/DNA. Then they would have left negative feedback. Did you wind up buying his 85 Payton? >>

Nope, I'm not going to touch anything this guy sells.... the only reason I'd buy would be to bust him and give his first deserved negative for the fraud that he is!
    image
  • Look for a super cheap one that you don't think is good and throw it in... If he deserves the negative slap him with it

That griffey looks extremely similar to one I have that has a loa from an auction house that works with jsa (says early career)
  • cubfan89cubfan89 Posts: 632 ✭✭✭
This guy now has a sandberg/Dawson signed card that is horrific. That might be the worst Dawson ever! How could that card ever pass?

  • << <i>This guy now has a sandberg/Dawson signed card that is horrific. That might be the worst Dawson ever! How could that card ever pass? >>

How sad... Dawson is very easy to get with a small donation to his foundation.

Sad is right. Looks. Like a 5 yr old forged Dawson right there.

So people won't have to go looking for the Dawson / Bell / Sandberg card the way I did:

Sorry, I actually don't even know how to post pics or anything. The guy just sold a Rickey Henderson tv for over $260! I'm not sure that auto looks good either.
