The highest 1943 steel Lincoln is MS68 I think. They bring a hefty price at all the auctions I've seen. There may be (1) MS69.

Yes. You don't want to touch the MS68 steel cent, not when they go for $40-45 bucks in MS67 and $600-900 in MS68. Not a good value for one tiny, near-invisible grade point, in my opinion.

What you need to ask yourself is whether you want MS or PR coins, or a mixture of the two. Then go for the best in your budget range. There are some top-level coins that are out of reach of most mortal collectors like me and most everyone else. Unless you are independently wealthy, and even then, I would do some window-shopping before you dive in. Look at the PCGS Daily Price Guide- you can reach it from the "PCGS" link at the top of this page.

Welcome... enjoy! Be careful with your money, but have fun with it. Some of us (myself included on rare occasions), get so wrapped up in it that we forget it is a mere hobby, a pleasurable pastime. To be taken seriously, but not too seriously.

For proof Jeffs, Roosevelts, Washingtons, Memorial Lincolns, Ikes and so forth Proof 69 Deep Cam is the top, except for a handful of PR 70 DCAMs which are a large leap up in price.

    pcm,

Which set are you interested in? Are you looking at the Complete Type Set, or one of the 20th Century Sets? I have a list of the max MS grades for the 20th Century set.

thanks for the responses. Need the 20th century ones even though it is a complete type set going back to 1793.

    Buffalo Nickel Type 2 1913-1938 MS-68
    Jefferson Nickel 1938-1964 MS-68FS
    Jefferson Nickel Silver 1942-1945 MS-68FS

Peace Dollar High Relief 1921 MS-67
Peace Dollar Low Relief 1922-1935 MS-68
Indian Head Quarter Eagle 1908-1929 MS-67
Indian Head Half Eagle 1908-1929 MS-67

Indian Head Eagle Motto 1908-1932 MS-68
St. Gaudens Double Eagle No Motto 1907-1908 MS-69
St. Gaudens Double Eagle Motto 1908-1933 MS-68

I have the info on the other crossing series for the 20th Century (Barbers, Liberty Nickels, Liberty Head Gold, etc.), but I only have the statistics for coins dated 1900 or later, so it may be skewed by earlier coins of the same Type.

    Pat,

1919 has 14 MS-68RD and 1 MS-69RD coins graded. Must have been someone's personal hoard (only 38 total MS-68RD wheats).

Thanks Keith. Now that I think about it I recall reading something about five years ago (?) regarding those coins. I even think a few of them were offered for sale but I can't remember who did the selling. I just remember seeing them all offered at once.
