USPS insurance for a non-scanned package

I mailed a coin from NJ to CA, Priority Mail insured with signature confirmation.
Usually my outbound packages get scanned at the DC closed to my home but not this time (it happened few times already). It got scanned tonight in San Diego after 2 days.

This situation popped up a doubt in my mind.
I know you can sometimes ask the postal clerk to scan it but most of the time (in my experience) they don't do that.
So, what happens if a package get lost and it hasn't been scanned anywhere from the Postal Service?
Is you insurance valid? Wouldn't it be an easy way to fool the USPS?

Any of you had experienced this situation?

On line purchase of postage is limited to $500 inusrance for this reason. They will honor the insurance even if they have no record of it ever making it to the post office. They will also note if you are habitual about it, so scamming them won't last for long. Anything over 250 I try to get scanned into the system with the clerk just to play is safe.

Reckless faith in the dollar's strength is reckless. Tariff proposals have demonstrated this.

You're sure about that? Scammers could print out at least a couple of free $500 insurance claims before they were denied. --Jerry

I have asked them to scan items that I was shipping uninsured with signature confirmation to show them as recieved and they semi-politely declined to do that. --Jerry

That happened to me too. Don't understand why since they have the scanner pretty close to their hands...

Clarification: $500 insurance limit when purchasing online postage through ebay or paypal.

Clerks are seldom successful scanning in an item at the counter when using their desktop scanner. My clerk uses the hand held portable like the carriers use and has no problem scanning item into the system. They are not oblgated to provide an incoming scan, most do it as a courtesy. This is another area where it pays to be on good, polite terms with the clerks.

I always make sure that my package is scanned by the postal clerk.

NO exceptions, and some times it takes some time, but that's thier job and I don't mind making sure thay do thier job.
