<< <i>I was looking forward to this this year. Couldn't participate last time.
If I remember correctly, there was some drama last go 'round. >>
I think there was drama each year it was run... always some lame member who would wreck the whole thing. Either someone insisting they sent out the gift or someone complaining they did get what they wanted or the gift they sent out was worth more than the one they received... Personally I had a blast doing it last year - I never really have anyone to buy for that enjoys our hobby as much as most of the people on the boards.
Lawnmowerman and his wife organized it for the last 3 years I believe. The first one was done by LostDart.
The drama that has happened in the past included someone not getting their gift at all. Some others that have gotten gifts were vocally disappointed. They showed what they got in photos. The standards for gifts were that it should be about $25, but many were generous, and some on the spot. Some of those that complained and later showed photos actually did have a $25 value. There was one case in which a guy got a bunch of banged up raw cards from the 1980s--now that was really bad.
The ones that complain on the boards put the wrong kind of atmosphere on the boards and just brings it down for everyone else. Many were kind enough to send other gifts to those that did not get anything. This whole fiasco gets especially hard on the organizer who has to do so much and then see it all crumble by a few bad folks who did not send anything. I know it was really hard on LostDart. While I do not like to leave people off the hook for their social obligations, the forums were no place for that. A private message to the organizer letting them know would suffice.
I participated every year except last. There was no particular reason why I skipped last year, but I would be all for it this year. I came to the conclusion that we all have problems, errands to run, time constraints, providing for our families, lost wages due to recession, financial concerns, etc., but this is too much fun to pass no matter what. I just like to strengthen a sense of community among collectors. The BST forums have for the most part been done on good faith and fair business, so I know there are many good people on here to take part in the Holiday Exchange.
While I like to talk to most board members about cards, storage, archival issues, I have also formed some nice friendships that dealt with things outside of cards. This board has also been a good source of advice beyond cards and none that would be possible if the rapport was not established within the hobby.
Whoever wants to organize it this year, I think it would be wise if they do it in tandem. Matt and Tonya helped eachother to do this the last few years. I think it will be too much of an undertaking for one person to do it unless they really have the time. Also, the organizer needs to be someone with good community standing and some considerable time on the boards to back it all up. It would really be horrible if another Gary spawned up during the holidays.

My sentiments exactly. I always had fun hunting for a gift to someone that likes collecting sports cards.

I think it's kind of ironic that although I have never participated, the OP was one of the "problem children" a couple years ago when he didn't send his items out until well beyond the holidays (assuming he did eventually).

I second what MeteoriteGuy and nightcrawler have to say in terms of it needing to be an established board member to take on this task. LostDart and Lawnmowerman were very different people, but both were established members, proved their track record of ethics and pretty much got along with everyone.
Let us keep this thread going, perhaps someone will volunteer. I am sure we can easily get 18 people or more.

I disagree that "length of service" is a qualifying attribute to "organize" a gift distribution.
There is NO monetary duty involved in the organization job. The guy just needs to make and keep a good chart and be able to herd cats.

No offense to you, Sean1125, as you may be a very good person acting in good faith, but put in some time over the next year or so and build up a good reputation and I am confident you'd get a different response than you have received this year.

Does that mean you're volunteer numero uno with sean organizing all this, storm? Tell you what, if you sign up, I will, too. I haven't ever done this on CU, but think it's a great idea.
I'm in a business where I keep quite a bit of information, including photo ID's, and really- just do that I keep them. I did a contest and the winner had no problem instantly giving me his address, and he should be getting the cards I sent for his son soon if he hasn't already. Address, name, and whatnot are public info- and I'd be happy to volunteer the time if people are comfortable with it. I'm out of a job at the moment and have 16 hours a day that I'm sitting on my bum twiddling my thumbs with nothing to do.
Tacking onto what storm said, if I were to have anything someone would want to trade/buy (I'm sure you will in the future) we would have to exchange information, and I'm sure there would be no problem doing it.

Well, "everytime" you buy/sell something on eBay, you have the opportunity to obtain the seller's/buyer's information as well.
The difference here is that someone brand new to the site with zero background shared is offering to collect personal information for a group of like collectors who MAY have ulterior motives. Let's say some schmuck sets up an account and 20 people send him their mailing address and other contact info. Going full tilt on the crazy, one could suggest that this new person would then do some research here on the site to find information about those peoples' collections and then go burglar their homes. Please note - and I can't make this clear enough - I don't believe this to be the case here.
Crazy things happen on the internet. To run one of these operations, it is QUITE USUAL to expect that the person organizing the event would have more than a few days of experience in the group.
Storm, if you can't understand that, I think people should be very cautious about following your other advices because this isn't rocket science.

I don't think it's messed up, I think Craig is a realist.
Storm brought up a good point, that the organizer won't be handling the money or gift. We will all be given the screen name and actual address of the person we need to buy or provide a gift for. That gift will be going directly to that individual whom we can contact.
Now there is that possibility where a bunch of member IDs belong to the organizer and he matches those IDs up with regulars like us, hence getting all the gifts. Just saying.
Gumbyfan is just being a realist and I know he means no ill will about anything or anyone. We need to hear all sides to this. What he describes has already happened in slightly different forms all over the world.
I know this board has gotten extremely sensitive since Gary and then with Arney too, which was even more surprising. And then there was an incident with a guy faking his death (or something to that extent) and almost getting the donations by the good hearted people of this board.....
With all this said, I like what Sean had to say, that he is not currently employed and would like to use his time positively. I know this operation will take many hours, so a person that can offer time is a real asset and has the potential to do a really thorough job of matching people up well and helping with the gift hunt. I recall Matt (who organized for 3 years) and I exchanging many emails when I needed advice on what to buy the member I was designated to provide a gift for.
I have given thought in becoming the organizer myself, but my time is already stretched thin between my regular job and the family business.

Everyone that wants to participate, send me all of the cards that you want to give. Then I will go through the list of names and divvy out the cards in the manner I see fit. Kind of like the real Santa Clause.
Let me say that I believe your offer is sincere, and I thank you for volunteering your time for the project!
Let me also add a couple points that may have been overlooked, or might be not quite clear.
There have been problems in the past with a few individuals in the forum representing something or someone that they were not. Some good people have been scammed out of some nice items and significant amounts of money. The "group" can only be hit so many times before our natural defenses are built. Unfortunately, sometimes this includes being suspicious of any "new" person who joins the forum.
I believe some members simply wanted you to become more familiar with the group and maybe do some deals with some longer-established members before entrusting you with some of their information. In this age, it simply a matter of fact that some people do not like to give information out to just anyone on a message-board. We all have different degrees of tolerance, so this is a boundary that, in my opinion, should be respected.
In summary, I can tell you that no offense was intended.
I think it's great when new guys join-in, and I applaud your efforts, and extend thanks. Just stick around awhile, maybe do some trades, maybe send some guys some inexpensive cards for sets, or something like that.
I look forward to seeing you on the boards, and hang in there!
