Shriners Show Wilmington , MA this past weekend

Did anyone attend the Shriners show in Wilmington, MA this past weekend. I went and thought it was a really good show. I picked up many 1950's and 60's topps Yankee cards for my team set collection and managed to find a 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 PSA 2 for a really good price. I would say that 80% of the dealers there were fantastic with only a few slimy ones. I had to laugh that my friends father was interested in one card and the dealer told him that he will sell it to him at half of book price. The dealer then said that it was a $100.00 card and he can have it for $50.00. My friends father asked he can see the book and found that the card was booked at $60.00. when he offered $30.00 the dealer said "no." Other than small issues like that to keep you on your toes, it was a great weekend of cards.

I was at the show - I always enjoy going as it's the best show in the Boston area, and it was great to catch up with many friends there. But my experience was that prices weren't quite in line with the online realities of prices. Sure, I might expect to pay a bit more than you would find something for on eBay, but not 2x - 3x as the standard.

It's great to see so much vintage stuff at a show, and not all "shiny" dealers.

So it certainly was a great show, but just light on the pickups for me this time around...

I found the prices to be OK, although one dealer had a card listed online and I emailed him to ask if he can bring it to the show so I can maybe purchase it. He did have it at the show for $200.00 more than was listed online. I moved on and found the same card at a different table for $300.00 less than his ebay price. I also try to stay away from the "shiny" new cards but I find myself picking one up here and one up there and actually enjoying them. I am slowly coming around.

My 3rd year in a row going, and once again it was worth the trip. Dropped off a 50 card sub, November special $4.25 a card which I wanted to get in before my membership expired november 11th. Also, some mechanical errors which it was helpful to detail the variations. Only spent about an hour and a half there had 3 kids in tow, but found a dealer that was well organized (all items were priced, boxes by player) and helpful and picked up 23 single Gretzky's, and a grab pack which contained 25 Gretzky's for a grand total of $40 (40% below marked prices). After a secondary review at home about 20 gradeable items and some of these individually would either fetch multiple times what I paid for the lot, or fit very nicely in my collection. Wish I had more time, but also so a lot of the same stuff from previous years. One dealer had a 99 retro gretzky that was marked $45, I said that can't be right, and he offered it to me for $20, his reasoning it was #'d. Walked away from that one. PSA was also helpful, and I didn't have to sticker all the card savers.
    Always buying Gretzky PSA Graded

Need some 2007 A&G Regular Back Mini's PM if you have any and I will send my needs list.

Sold a bunch of t3's and t9's I was peddling to buy more.

I picked up about 40 1952's autos for a great price, also two nice 52 toppps hi numbers (one was auto'd) for a decent price as well as a John Marzano auto who is super tough.

I hit two 9.5 strasburgs on BGS previews table that will be hitting ebay, got a nice score on an SGC preview and dropped two cards to be slabbed (since PSA doesnt slab S74 silks) Droppped a mechanical error and a 10 card sub to PSA DNA.

I picked up about 20 cards for my red menace sets.

Best of all, I made some new friends and saw some old ones along the way. I must have missed Scooter since I usually recognize him!

I had a lot of fun, a few laughs and all in all thought it was a great show! Again some prices way out of line, others willing to work with you. There was an unbelievable letter which had surfaced that was Ty Cobb writing to Hughie Jenning wife to ask her how Hughie was feeling in the Sanitarium after his car accident. Now that is history!
