104 Down--1934 Carreras Film Stars Completed in PSA 8 or Better

Set number `04 that I have completed with each card PSA 8 or better is 1934 Carreras Film Stars. The final four cards in this 72-card set come from NYC dealer Steve Iurelli who has sold me many non-sports cards in the past--particularly from 1930s sets of movie stars. The cards are oval in shape making them easier to find in high grade than traditional cards that are 76 years old.

The last four cards I bought me to allow me to finish the set were Ginger Rogers, Joan Crawford, Mae West and the Four Marx Brothers. In addition to these legends, other film stars in the set include Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, Maureen O'Sullivam. Douglas Fairbanks, Edward G. Robinson and Greta Garbot. The set raing is 9.04 with 7 PSA 10s, 61 psa 9s and 4 psa 8s--remarkable for such a vintage set. Still, it ranks only 3rd on the PSA Set Registry. I will let it rest at this level.

The set represents the 20th non-sport set I have completed with each card PSA 8 or better. I am focusing my effort in non-sports on sets I like which includes vintage or semi-vintage movie/tv star sets from 1967 and earlier. Thank you to all collectors and dealers for helping me achieve my goals.

Jim , just got on and saw your post.

How do you do it ? Another fine effort , for sure. My son graduates from Westpoint in May. Maybe then I'll have enough time to see the great collection.

    Hi Jim

    Congratulations! That's a cool set - I picked it up - raw - years ago from a dealer of non-sport - can't remember who...

It's a good looking set IMO.

Wish you could post a few...

Good luck on the "close" sets.

edit: picked up the set from: creamofcards( 12561) - very nice person to deal with.

    Another congrats are in order!

FWIW those 30's English tobacco sets are not that scarce in high quality condition.

Seems the Brits knew how to keep the cards in nice shape.

    WarHound would know more.

    Good for you.

    Thanks guys.

I agree in general Steve--you can buy many of the sets raw on British ebay in good shape but not in consistent psa 8 or better shape.

The cards are hard to find graded as right now demand is low. My own view is that the demand for mint 1930s cards will increase and certainly the quality of the stars is strong.

    Hello to All ,

Jim , congrtulations on putting together this high grade set , long may it continue .

Steve , agreed in part that some UK sets are available in high grade , this doen't mean that they'll grade out at 8 or above though , and this latest sets of Jims is a real hard nut to crack due to the oval shape , the edges might stay nice but not always , and many many card backs were produced O/C .

All the best to both .
