I've never been dinged for that before, only when the lazy clowns ding me on the insured value ignoring the "Canadian Goods Returning" stamps. I always assumed they cannot charge duties for a service that technically was given in another country. Just use the rebate form on the back of the customs slip to get your money back. What probably happened was that they opened it, saw the PSA receipt and charged you as if you were buying cards.
  • I called Canada customs and they stated that all services provided in the us on goods brought back to Canada are subject to the taxes. I would think that if Canada customs starts checking more packages more Canadians will have this problem. Just another way to rip us off!!!!

I've had a lot of Canadian collectors tell me they prefer KSA to avoid duty tax and high shipping charges.

KSA? are you kidding me? do US collectors prefer 'USA Grading' because they have cheaper shipping rates than PSA?

If PSA were based in Canada I think more collectors would look for other options when having their cards graded, for me it wouldn't matter.

Of course but your comparison is apples and oranges, I've never paid anything (any charges I've had get refunded) to get my cards back from PSA or BGS, so it's a relative non issue. Higher shipping sure but that's a real additional cost any grading company incurs so it's not like it's unfair, I tend to send larger subs to make up for the extra $20 shipping (vs USA costs). Even if the feds have started charging tax on the grading service it's also relatively small potatoes, and we aren't paying California tax or anything. If KSA were a real alternative any submitter would still be paying that same 13% tax, it's a tax not a duty. So a $200 grading order which at the trend of current specials would get you 40 cards graded, you would pay another $26 in tax, sure it sucks, but it's no the end of the world.

and again, you would pay the same $26 tax to KSA if you had the cards graded here instead.

Hey, I agree with you! If I were in Canada I'd make it up by sending bigger orders and wouldn't send anything to KSA. But I have had a lot of collectors over the past couple years prefer KSA to PSA specifically for the shipping and duty tax reasons. I've always heard that duty tax should be paid on PSA grading services...

Last year I sent a $1,400 order from here in the states (Virginia) to Edmonton and shipping plus tracking and insurance came to around $55. I'm pretty sure if PSA were in Canada they would charge at least that to send the cards back to me. In this scenario what I send to PSA would be very limited and even more carefully filtered/pre-graded.

As far as the tax within Canada (non-duty) I wasn't aware of that...

BTW - just curious to all the Canadian PSA submitters...what is the charge like for PSA to send the cards back to you?

    God save the Queen.
  • PSA charges us $39.05 for 1-10 items, $42.60 for 11-20, $46.20 for 21-30, $49.75 for 31-40 items, $56.70 for 41-60 items and an additional $.85 per card for orders over 60 items. I ship my orders fedex over night and that usually cost me approx $50 and I usually send in 20-30 cards per order. It's not cheap by any stretch and to have Customs ding you even more ($70 on this last order) makes it hardly worth doing. Add having the cards graded by "Darth Grader" into the equation and it's a total waste of money.
  • Sending cards to PSA from Canada is a big pain in the hassle. Last time I sent, Canada Customs opened the package to inspect it at the border, then sent it on to PSA, which returned it to me ungraded because the package had been compromised. I stopped sending after that.

  • Once customs gets involved there's usually problems. X border shipping is tricky. I'm just glad I don't buy and sell printers. lol.

That would have been US customs, Canadian Customs only reviews incoming mail.

not to turn this into a political debate but... don't knock it until you try it and Canada spends less than 10% GDP on healthcare, US over 16%

Imo the U.S. still has the best healthcare system in the world. And i still am not forced to buy it. In 2014 i may be forced if Barry's system is not turned.
