Removing 1961 and 62 Topps Stamps from Booklet

Hello -

I have incomplete Stamp sets in the 62 and 63 booklets. Many of the stamps are starting to come off the paper, some as much as 80-90% with no paper loss.

Can anyone recommend a method for removal to ensure no paper loss? My plan is just to put the stamps in pages or some other storage type. I don't care if there is no adhesive left, as long as there is no paper loss.

Thanks!
Nathaniel

  • I'm not familiar with the 61/62 Topps stamps. But you would use steam from a kettle to separate a traditional postal stamp from an envelope.

Steam might work, but if there is already significant gum
disturbance/loss I would soak and press them.

Steam in conjunction with amateur and impatient fingers
generally makes for a bad result. Bends, creases, tares
    and paper loss can occur.

    ...............

    Soaking:

Leave the album pages attached, and cut out around the
    stamps.

Soak them overnight in bottled water.

They should be "free" and floating. If NOT, wait longer.
GENTLE sliding finger pressure on the top of the stamp
will usually get the stubborn ones free, BUT you gotta
be GENTLE or you will get tares and paper loss.

Once the stamps are free, a stamp-blotter book is best.
You can use regular/clean blotter paper, too.

Lay the stamps on the blotter - either close the blotter
book or put a second blotter page on top.

Gather all of you phone books and place them atop the
    blotter book or pages.

72-hours is best, but if you are impatient so be it.

If you don't like the result, repeat the soaking/blotting
    until you get it right.

"Right," means totally flat with no curl and no creases.

    ....................

If you wanna play around with regumming, practice on
    some junk stamps FIRST.

Regummed stamps will NOT pass PSA's inspection, but if
you just want them to look nicer it might be an option for
    you.

    (I would not regum them.)

This is an elementary method of regumming.

My situation is a bit different than yours as I am trying to find single stamps.I had completed the 61/62 stamp books and sold them about 4 years ago at that time I was able to find stamps quite easily.I have picked up 2 partial books 61/62 and started workong on them again however luck is not with me this time as a majority of the ones on auction are graded and priced way out of line.If there is a safe method of pulling them out of the albums I am be better off looking for other partial books and use stamps and find missing stamps in them. There are always partial books on auction quite cheap.

Thanks guys for the recc's. I'll let you know how things turn out. So many of the stamps appear ready to pop right off the page, I might try a simple steam to see if that does the trick and if not, do the soaking route. The Mantle in the 61 Booklet is sweet and half way off, so I'll work with a common before tackling it. image

Maybe ask some of the stamp people on the stamp forums what to try?
