Did you tell them that their might be a $400 card (if PSA 10) in there?

Just the opposite here, I had 25 pre made mixed lots in team bags and just about every boy who came, when offered candy or cards, took cards. i actually ran out.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY
  • That would have been a great treat Jim.

It's nice to hear the young fellows would rather have sportscards, good idea with the mixed lots.

  • I am so happy this has become a topic.

After reading a few posts from this forum on the absolute worthlessness of cards from the late 80's and 90's, I decided to take about 1000 cards from these years and pack them into groups of 25 and give them out to the boys last night. I made sure every pack (which I simply put a rubber band around) had a few big names so the kids would get excited opening them.

Then I realized these kids are 10-12 years old and probably never heard of 80% of the players in these packs, but maybe their dads / uncles / etc would. But that's beside the point.

Never the less, it was WONDERFUL to hear some of the comments being made like, 'this house is giving out the best stuff' or ' mom, I just got baseball cards!!!' or 'thank you very much' (didn't get too many thank you's last night which is sad).

I'll tell you, I got more enjoyment out of seeing/hearing these kids get excited about receiving baseball cards than I EVER would have dealing on ebay. Let it be known, however, that before giving these away I tried to sell on ebay with zero takers.

  • Wow, great idea guys. Hopefully I will remember that next year.

  • I do a blend, I buy a 300 count box of generic type baggie (fold over) put an assortment of sports non sport cards, heat seal down the middle making (2) smaller bags then also put in the treat size candy bar. Every body gets cards and candy. This year we had over 300 trick or treaters and most, even the young girls like the cards.

Where my parents live (Pontiac, MI), they do a 1-hr trick-or-treating time period. They blow a siren at 6pm and blow another at 7pm. Kids are not allowed to trick-or-treat outside of that window.

This year was a down year for them, they got about 150 kids. In the past, they have had years of over 300 kids. IN AN HOUR. It's unreal - packs of 6-8 kids coming up, only to be replaced immediately by another pack of 6-8 kids. Constantly for an hour straight.

I was over at my brother-in-law's girlfriend's for a party she was having this year (in Spokane, WA). I would say probably 90% or more of the kids said "thank you" when they were given candy. And that was to other kids - her sons and their friends were doing the handing-out.

I think next year I will try giving away cards. I tried it once before and it wasn't a big hit with the kids and my house got egged. LOL.

WTF? That seems like how they would make kids trick-or-treat in North Korea or something.

No not at all. I was living close to NYC at the time and I am guessing giving out Jeter cards would have been better received then what I was handing out. FWIW The cards I was handing out was unopened packs of 2007 Topps since that was the most recent packs you could get. I thought 90% of the kids would have been into it. I know I would have when I was a kid. The girls my wife had girly stuff to give out (I forget what exactly it was).

I think I got egged because I wasn't handing out candy as an option.
