SSCA gold coins

I have recently added an SSCA gold coin to my collection. I have had numerous near misses with these over the years and was finally able to procure a suitable example for my collection. Shipwreck coins are controversial, overpriced, and obviously processed, but the story has some appeal, and the coins are very attractive. The photo from the dealer (below) fails to capture the intensity of the luster. When I opened the box, it looked like a coin straight from the Mint. While it does not strictly fit the "dirty gold" mission, many of these were encrusted with dirt and grime which were professionally removed in a well-documented process.
At my request, Doug Winter has also written a blog about these, linked here.
I was holding out for a coin other than the ubiquitous 57-S $20, and if I find something else down the road, I can accommodate this, too. Without further ado, here is a photo of the coin.
It's in a gold label PCGS AU-58 holder, CAC'ed, and purchased from Joe O'Connor.

Blu62vette—The number of PL and DMPL double eagles recovered from the SSCA is very small. There were 23 in PL and 7 in DMPL out of over 5000 coins recovered, which is roughly similar to the percentage found among other dates (ie, less than 1%).
Based on CAC population data, 193 1857-S double eagles have received a CAC sticker, which includes 9 (DM)PL coins. Interestingly, less than 4% of the SSCA double eagles have received stickers, while 30% of (DM)PL examples have received stickers. If the sticker rate is 50% (could be lower), then perhaps 18 (DM)PL coins have been seen. Considering the high percent of CAC (DM)PL double eagle, I would not be surprised if these were submitted by one or a couple of dealers with a small “hoard.” Perhaps we will see a promotion in the near future!
<< <i>At long beach I saw both the DMPL and PL examples. Very nice coins...... >>
If you see them again, please let me know who has them.
Happy Halloween.
Go Steelers!

Correction to my earlier statements on the population of PL and DMPL SSCA double eagles:
Per Christie’s auction catalog of SSCA gold coins, there were 50 examples designated as PL and 7 examples at DMPL.
